Brigham Young junior forward Trent Plaisted will declare for the NBA draft but won't hire an agent, Cougars coach Dave Rose said Thursday.

The 6-foot-11 Plaisted averaged 15.6 points and 7.7 rebounds per game for BYU, the Mountain West Conference champs.

Rose said that Plaisted plans to go through the draft process and wait until the withdrawal date in June before making a final decision. Plaisted, who previously redshirted, would be returning for his fifth season, Rose said.

By not hiring an agent, Plaisted preserves his college eligibility should he decide not to remain in the draft.

Rose said he wasn't surprised that Plaisted decided to declare, considering so many juniors are looking to test the draft process this spring.

I can't believe this guy is doing this. I really don't think he has any chance whatsoever and will only expose himself as not an NBA style player. Maybe thats just me but I don't see him going anywhere. You know he will be back next year.

I'm not surprised with what he's doing. In fact, all the draft experts and analysts said that this is exactly what he should do. By not hiring an agent he is allowed to go to pre-draft camps and be observed by scouts, and can still return for his senior season. I get what you are saying...maybe being observed up close by NBA scouts only gives them an opportunity to see his flaws and holes in his game. But flaws aside, he does have some mild NBA potential. But personally, I think he will get a lot of great feedback from scouts on things he needs to develop in the offseason and will return to BYU for his senior season. I think this will also give him a reality check when he goes to these pre-draft camps and goes up against other draft prospects who really know how to dominate. I think he'll realize he isn't ready.

Now, if he ends up staying in the draft I will be very surprised. I think if he had a strong intention of entering the draft this year he would hire an agent. Since he has no agent, I would assume he is merely testing the waters to see what his draft stock would be. I compare it to my own experiences. Before I was even close to graduating college, I started interviewing with the BIG DOGS in advertising even though I knew they wouldn't take me on. I just wanted the experience to know what I was going up against. The only way I see him staying in the draft is if he has the desire to play overseas...which is a rumor that has gone around campus lately.

With all due respect, I don't think Plaisted will make a good pro. I don't mean this as a knock to him, but imo, he seems like a great college player that will find it hard to transition to the pro level. I'm not just saying this as anti-BYU stuff. I don't think T. Hansbrough of UNC will make a very good pro player either and he is POY.

No worries at all. I think most of us agree with you. I think he could work really hard this off season and improve enough of his game to jump up a few spots next year, and possibly make a team. BUT, Plaisted doesn't come across to me as a guy who really pushes himself day in and day out to get better. That may be an unfair observation by me, but I just haven't seen a ton of improvement from his Freshman to Junior years, so I wouldn't expect a drastic change in his game from this year to next. I was watching the team run through their off season drills yesterday with the trainers and he was usually off on the side of the court watching. On a side note, our PG for next year Lamont Morgan, JC transfer who redshirted this year, looks like he has the speed that we've been lacking at that position. He can cut to the hoop really well.

I think it is a little like my situation. I am trying to decide whether I should go back to school to get an MBA. My grades weren't stellar but I think I could test really well, but I am also not sure I have the discipline that it takes to get through an MBA program. So I ordered some GMAT practice tests. If I really study and practice hard and I am testing pretty well then I will sign up for the GMAT and start filling out applications, but if the early tests show that I just don't have that much business potential, I will only be out $25.

Plaisted may not have what it takes to make it in the NBA, but there has been speculation that he could go in the middle of the first round (I doubt it, but what do I know). The best way to find out is to test the waters. Who knows, maybe they will like his potential and he'll get drafted, or scouts say they like his potential but want him to stick around a year and work on a few things, or they just come out and say he doesn't have the right stuff. He shouldn't be any worse off because of this, although I doubt he gets drafted high, if at all, this year.

Not a BYU fan but I have thoughts.

I think its a smart thing for Plaisted to do what he is doing by declaring and not hiring an agent. It will allow him to even more valuable feedback that he has already received from the NBA scouts who have already seen him. Its a risk-free process for the player. The only downside is that he has to eat the expense of attending any pre-draft camps. The other downside might be that he may decide to return to BYU after getting feedback but may not be given the opportunity to develop said skills because it doesn't fit with what Dave Rose is trying to do from a team perspective.

I wish him luck. He plays hard and has represented both BYU and the MWC well.

I agree as well. I don't see this being a bad thing for him. Why not give it a shot to make more $$$ than he would have if he stays for an extra year. He already has his degree as well or will have it after the end of this month. Just because you guys didn't like the guy when he played against your teams doesn't mean he's stupid for trying to make any money with his basketball talent. He even left the window open to play one more year at BYU and I guarantee Dave Rose wouldn't mind having Trent come back if he decides. Relax guys, who here wouldn't do what he's doing if you were in his shoes?

Actually a blurb in the Deseret Newspaper says that Plaisted can accept payment for the expenses of his trips to NBA draft camps. If he goes to workout in front of individual teams then he must pay his own way. So now there really isn't any downside. Here is the paragraph from the article:

"Plaisted can now be invited to the pre-draft camps designed to evaluate players. He is allowed to accept expenses to the NBA predraft camp in Orlando, but he must pay for any other camps or trips to teams for workouts."

Nothing wrong with Plaisted seeing where he fits in with the draft.................the worst is he comes back with a good knowledge of what he needs to do and work on to make the step to the NBA.

First step, would be to practice 1000 free throws a day...............big guys get fouled and go to the line a lot, so Plaisted could up his scoring avergae 5 points a game if he hits his free throws.

Exactly, I just don't see him going in the first round, and if he doesn't then I bet he comes back another year to improve on some things to better his chances at a first round pick. It's just difficult to see an NBA team really draft him at this moment and I really think one more year could help him more than hurt his chances. A solid championship team returning all of it's stars can only help him get more media exposure. Not to mention if the satilite deal is finished by then.

The only point I disagree with you on ragtime is that I don't even think Plaisted is a great college player. I think he's very good for the MWC but he's WAY too inconsistent, lacks a physical game, is too limited in his offensive arsenal, and is horrible at the stripe for me to consider him a "great" college player. He's only testing the waters. I'd be surprised if he wasn't back at BYU next year.

No way is Plaisted a 1st round pick this year............way too many guys are entering the draft as underclassmen...................he's be best served at BYU another year.
