Deseret News on new proposed bowl...

Recommended Posts

This is coming from a UNM fan who despises BYU and Utah.

I think we can agree on Dec in SLC being a bad time for a Bowl game in SLC.. Other than that, Utah as a state, supports their sports probably better than any other state in the MWC.. You consistently try to bash the lifestyle in Utah which is probably your motivation again on this post..

Certainly, you don't think ABQ is some entertainment capital anytime and even more so in Dec? 30K(83%) is nothing to brag about for the ABQ Bowl, considering you were the home team. And your average home attendance in 2006 and 2007 was very, very average...

I've already said this idea is a bad one but even if it does go through, I'm sure it could produce just as well as the ABQ Bowl in attendance and slaughter ABQ's numbers if a local team is involved...

I am NOT gonna brag about ABQ anytime soon either....but if you would take a straw poll...I think most people would prefer a trip to historic NM and the surrounding areas of Albuquerque over SLC and the state of Utah ANYTIME...ANYDAY....period!!!!. Our culture, open-minded locals, food, and other amenities we provide as hosts. We also have the following within a respectble driving distance:

*The world longest aerial TRAM! at Sandia Peak

*Historic Santa Fe and the Palace of the Governors(a tradtionally high tourist attraction)--->BTW this is the nation's oldest state capital!

*Historic Parks such as White Sands and Carlsbad Caverns

*Historic National Monuments such as Bandalier National in Los Alamos, NM

*Birthplace of the World War II's atomic bomb in Los Alamos, NM and corresponding museum

*Delicious and affordable cuisine not available anywhere else in the nation!

*Plenty of local skiing resorts

*The new and unique SPACEPORT in southern NM!

*Have your Las Vegas fix with numerous casino and gambling resorts to fit your lifestyle

*Nightlife featuring dance clubs, strip clubs, and our downtown bar scene. It ain't like Vegas.....but I get by!

*Golf resorts include nationally know Black Mesa Resort and Towa Golf Resort

*MUCH MORE THAT I NEED TO MENTION!

I'm not going to brag about the NM Bowl either but it seems having a bowl in SLC Utah is a futher step down than already having one in ABQ NM. What's next? The General Custer Bowl in Laramie? Our bowls are getting worse not better. Sure it will help all our teams from getting left out of the already saturated bowl season but cmon!

I still haven't figured out why it's a bad idea to have all of our teams represented in bowl season. I guess I have a hard time finding anything negative about all of our bowl teams being represented. In addition, I can't figure out what is wrong with having the bowls in MWC cities. To me, it seems like those things are advantages.

Yes, the dates suck, the pay-outs suck, etc. Yes, we need a better bowl for our champion. However, adding more bowls in MWC cities is a positive for the league.

Count me as one of the people NOT all that high on a SLC bowl game... however I do live in one of the worlds largest tourist destinations and I did live in SLC for a long time...

Seriously if you think that ABQ has some magical pull that dwarfs SLC I think that means you are the closed minded one, or else you have not spent much time in SLC (maybe both?).

The Ski based tourism of SLC alone dwarfs ABQ in dollar value, and it is the State of Utah with 5 National Parks and a host of State Parks, wilderness area, that provides sight seeing that matches up with just about any state in the Union.

Salt Lake City will never be confused with Vegas or New Orleans as a party town but, the numbers say that SLC, and Utah in general is a pretty popular tourist destination.

Good point LOBOBLAST!

Also is there ANY guarentee that the WAC or MWC will have enough bowl eligible teams to accommodate the Rocky Mountain Bowl? Given the tough schedules that most of our league members have.....obtaining 6 or 7 wins may be quite a task.

Right now this is the pecking order of bowls for the MWC:

LV Bowl

Poinsetta Bowl

Ft. Worth Bowl

NM Bowl

Houston Bowl(if TCU is eligible)

Here is the order for the WAC:

Boise Bowl

Hawaii Bowl

NM Bowl

....and then you have the Rocky Mountain Bowl at the bottom of the selection list for each conference. Who does the RM Bowl select if no other conference teams are available? Are the fans in SLC doomed to have a Marshall vs. Southern Illionis matchup? In addition what happens when a team from either conference makes it into one BCS bowls by pulling a Utah/BSU.Hawaii and going undefeated or something. That means we have a higher chance of having a vacant bowl with no teams available to play in it.

Don't get out much do you? No need to mention our professional sports and the Olympics, right? We've already disproved your myths on alcohol and clubs in SLC a few weeks ago..

As far as taking a "straw poll", no need.. Let's allow the real numbers speak for themselves. New Mexico doesn't come close to our tourism industry in visitors and dollars spent.

And when you say "plenty of local ski resorts", what does that mean? It takes me 20-40 minutes(living in the SLC metro) to get to 8 world class resorts. How many do you have and how long does it take you to get there?

Please show me any ski resort in New Mexico that gets the amount of snow-fall as our top resorts.. Most of our resorts are well over 550 inches of powder this year and Alta received almost 700 inches.. It looks like Taos gets around 220 inches a year... The industry is defined by snowfall, terrain and how well the resorts cater to their guests.. Period..

Also, show me tourism/revenue rankings comparable to Deer Valley and Park City..

I was saving this for a later date but I guess this is just as good a time as any.

Let me introduce you to Las Vegas' newest project

Las Vegas Wet to be opened in 2011

Snow skiing, swimming, surfing and a theme park just minutes from your strip hotel. Not to mention all the rest. What will Las Vegas think of next?

The Project

The current scope of the initial development includes, but is not limited to the following:

Now you're splitting straws!

Utah offers everything NM offers. So what if it's more....ABQ offers it and is within minutes of the stadium. Sandia Tram is only a 15 min drive from the stadium, another 20 minute Tram ride (worlds longest) and you're at 10K elevation and ready to shread the down the mountain! There are Las Vegas style casinos just minutes from the stadium. All 3 casinos surrounding Abq are now major Casino Hotel Resorts.

The only thing Utah offers more of is......COLD WEATHER!!

Bad bad idea to have a bowl game in SLC Utah!

I think New Mexico is a great place.. I've done many white water rafting trips there.. I've also spent some time in ABQ and really enjoyed myself... As far as Spana is concerned, he's clearly uneducated and ignorant with just about everything Utah... He never offers anything other than his ignorant opinion and tries to pass that off as fact.

He needs to be accountable for his words and claims... I'm more than happy to help with his education..
