Pretty great in-state recruiting tactic. Harsins 9 assistant coaches are going on a 4 day tour this week of all 137 Idaho high school's with football programs. 4 days, over 4,000 collective miles.

That's really cool. Great way to connect.

Seems like a waste of time. What does Idaho out out on average? Five FBS recruits a year?

We usually schollie around 5 per year, BYU/USU/Utah usually get a few, Idaho rarely gets more than one or two (hardly FBS, I know) and a few more land elsewhere.

But this is more than just football recruiting, it's a publicity move to keep up in-state enrollment for the non-student athlete as well.

I think, therefore I'm.

Boise State also picks up several select walk ons each year that end up earning scholarships. I think it's a good program.

Exactly.

Call it what you will but Boise State has leveraged Football success to improve Academics, and get donations/support for campus (non-sports) initiatives.

I think it's a great idea to make an effort to keep and reach out to the local kids. I'd say they probably have around 5 a year. Last year there were 8 and Boise State got 2 of them. They have already lost next years top player in the state to Notre Dame. There have been some pretty good QB's to come out of Idaho recently and Boise State has gotten none of them.

Yeah...looks more like a PR move...doubt that this staff really finds it all that 'tactical' to go full stop after Idaho's limited number of FBS products. But like any other staff, they'll recruit the best they can get where they can get them....if the best fit and get for them in any given year is an Idaho kid, that's a bonus I guess.

Nebraska did the same thing and their overlooked walk ons often turned out being valuable contributors. Locking down an entire region is good for recruiting, branding, and also for attendance.

Remember that every argument you have with someone on MWCboard is actually the continuation of a different argument they had with someone else also on MWCboard.

Plus it helps your fan base. I know there are people in Wyoming who get mad when they feel like the coaching staff doesn't look at in state players. This is a way to appease those people. It is crazy, Wyoming has even less D1 players but some people get bent out of shape because we don't have enough Wyoming guys.

The overall talent is improving.. #1 OG in the nation is from Idaho.

And northern Nevada has produced a McDonald's All American in basketball. Not sure it means anything. Idaho needs about 2 million more people to become an average high major football producing state.

I think it's a great tool to build even stronger community with the state. Something you could never do in cal because of size. Boise does great in this area IMO.

That's a good point about the PR aspect.

I actually prefer SDSU's current trend of going after more non-SD and non-CA guys.

The SD kids are all PAC-12 prima donnas for the most part. Where as the inland empire, AZ, NV and Southern kids love the idea of spending five years in San Diego.

We're finally getting back to using our best recruiting tool...San Diego.

Very smart. Regardless of how many Division 1 prospects there are, you should always try and win your local recruits. In addition, you'll establish positive relationships with coaches.

I agree it's not a bad move...seeing similar things with the Bulldogs...but we know that ultimately coaches will go after what they see as the best fit for that specific recruiting need. But yes, if it's a local kid or in state kid, that's a plus.

That's the reason for most FB programs. It has been the reasoning for selling FB in Fresno for a long time.

It works.

I get beat up on this board but I don't agree with this. No question Boise has a national brand because of football. But every study I've read shows that in a small market there's a opportunity cost which basically splits a donors ability to support sports or academics but rarly both. And also there is no correlation between the two. Does anyone have a link to show the effects of college football and the improvement of the academic arm?

I don't know if this qualifies as improvement to academics but after Colorado won their National Championship in the early nineties, their donations to their general fund increased nearly 40% if I recall correctly. Some of that would trickle down to academics.

I lived in Denver then and my wife was in grad school at CU. I can certainly see the benefit winning had in CU. Young folks have no clue how strong the brand was for about 10 years.
