Are Hawaii's Facilities Really That Horrible

Recommended Posts

According to the local newspapers, June is looking to leave Hawaii because of the horrible facilities that they have for practice. It also makes mention of the other penny-ante antics of their administration concerning other facets in their athletic department. You wonder if they are going to set the football program back for years to come just because they are being cheap. They have a coach that would probably stay for life if the administration would just meet him half way.

Forget about ever getting in the MWC with that attitude.

I've heard for years from people with direct knowledge how bad their facilities are. June hasn't been very vocal about it, but rather chose to be patient and gradually make his case.....until recently.

The offices the coaches have to work out of are literally falling apart, from what I've heard, they're old, they're small, and totally inadequate for a Div. 1-A football program. Colt Brennan publically criticized the facilities this season, saying that they couldn't even get soap or hot water in the showers in the locker room.

The school obviously isn't willing to do what it takes to maintain a top quality athletics program, and now they're faced with the biggest, most frightening ultimatum they could imagine: Invest heavily in upgrading the facilities, or risk losing a coach who is viewed by the locals as something of a deity, who has brought pride and excitement and dignity to a football crazed public, a man who has brought a lot of positive national publicity to the team and the university. As a result of the Sugar Bowl, June has certainly provided them the money to spend, but apparently they are unwilling to spend it. Now they're going to lose their meal ticket.

Nice job, Hawaii.

How much money does Hawaii really have? Travel and recruiting expenses have to take a big chunk out of their budget. Weren't posters here complaining about the cost of having to travel there if they were an MWC member? Consider how many recruits they would need to fly over there, house for a few days, yet still go back uncommittted. Averaging 6 games on the mainland during the season is pretty hefty as well. Imagine one Pac-10 team visiting a Big East team six games a year and that's still not even as far as flying to the Islands.

I think that's more the reason of Jones leaving rather than the lack of facilities or salary. He got a taste of how inferior his team was as opposed to what he saw in Georgia. He knows Hawaii itself isn't enough of a lure for the type of athletes needed to compete with the big boys. This team was his apex and they still got their asses handed to them.

First off, June Jones has complained for a number of years now about recruiting budget, this year it has been stated over and over again to be only $50,000.

Second this is the first year that I can think of that Hawaii has every traveled to the mainland for 6 games and they only made 5 trips. They came over for the La Tech game and stayed until they played UNLV, then the went back home.

I guess you don't know much about Hawaii...

Hawaii's away games:

2007- 6 games; La Tech, UNLV, Idaho, San Jose St, Nevada, and Georgia, played 13 games, so played 7 games in Hawaii

2006- 5 games; Alabama, Boise St, Fresno St, New Mexico St, and Utah St, played 14 games, so played 9 games in Hawaii

2005- 5 games; Michigan St, Idaho, La Tech, San Jose St, and Nevada, played 12 games, so played 7 games in Hawaii

2004- 4 games; Rice, UTEP, Boise St, and Fresno St, played 13 games, so played 9 games in Hawaii

2003- 6 games; USC, UNLV, Tulsa, La Tech, San Jose St, and Nevada, played 14 games, so played 8 games in Hawaii

2002- 5 games; BYU, UTEP, Boise St, Fresno St, and Rice, played 14 games, so played 9 games in Hawaii

2001- 3 games; Nevada, SMU, and Tulsa, played 12 games, so played 9 games in Hawaii

2000- 4 games; UTEP, TCU, Rice, and Fresno St, played 12 games, so played 8 games in Hawaii

1999- 3 games; SMU, Tulsa, and San Jose St, played 13 games, so played 10 games in Hawaii

1998- 4 games; Utah, San Diego St, UTEP, and Fresno St, played 12 games, so played 8 games in Hawaii

1997- 4 games; UNLV, Colorado St, BYU, and San Jose St, played 12 games, so played 8 games in Hawaii

1996- 4 games; Wyoming, Fresno St, San Diego St, and Air Force, played 12 games, so played 8 games in Hawaii

1995- 5 games; Wyoming, UNLV, New Mexico, BYU, and Colorado St, played 12 games, so played 7 games in Hawaii

1994- 4 games; California, UTEP, Utah, and San Diego St, played 12 games, so played 8 games in Hawaii

1993- 4 games; BYU, New Mexico, Wyoming, and Fresno St, played 12 games, so played 8 games in Hawaii

1992- 6 games; Oregon, Air Force, Utah, UTEP, San Diego St, and Illinois, played 13 games, so played 7 games in Hawaii

1991- 5 games; Wyoming, Iowa, Colorado St, BYU, and San Jose St, played 12 games, so played 7 games in Hawaii

1990- 4 games; Air Force, Utah, UTEP, and San Diego St, played 12 games, so played 8 games in Hawaii

1989- 2 games; Wyoming and Colorado St, played 13 games, so played 11 games in Hawaii

1988- 3 games; Colorado St, Utah, and San Diego St, played 12 games, so played 9 games in Hawaii

1987- 3 games; Wisconsin, UTEP, and New Mexico, played 12 games, so played 9 games in Hawaii

1986- 4 games; Air Force, Colorado St, Utah, and San Diego St, played 12 games, so played 8 games in Hawaii

1985- 4 games; Fresno St, Wyoming, New Mexico, and UTEP, played 12 games, so played 8 games in Hawaii

1984- 2 games; Colorado St and UTEP, played 11 games, so played 9 games in Hawaii

1983- 3 games; Utah, UNLV, and Air Force, played 11 games, so played 8 games in Hawaii

1982- 3 games; Colorado St, BYU, and New Mexico, played 11 games, so played 8 games in Hawaii

1981- 3 games; Wyoming, San Diego St, and UTEP, played 11 games, so played 8 games in Hawaii

1980- 3 games; Wyoming, New Mexico, and UNLV, played 11 games, so played 8 games in Hawaii

So since 1980 Hawaii has played 116 games on the mainland and 231 games in Hawaii... So over the last 28 years Hawaii has averaged 4.14 games on the mainland and 8.25 games in Hawaii. Sorry to give your 6 away game thought a black eye...

How bad are the facilties at UH? You ever see all that trash blowing around their football stadium during a game. That's wall paper, sheetrock, roofing felt and shingles from June Jones office. I'd be pissed too. I hear once his briefcase blew by on a 4th and one and had to waste a time out.

Jones clearly is in a position of strength right now and he is trying to use it to get as much out of it as possible. Reading his statements I think it is pretty obvious that he wants to stay at Hawaii......but not at all cost. He knows Hawaii needs him and that a lot of other schools want him. That gives him the power to at least try and dictate his demands to the administration or to leave if they don't. He is hardly the first person to employ this tactic and he won't be the last.

For Hawaii's sake I hope they keep him, he really was the first football coach in ages to have success at that place.

As far as I know June has cut down heavily on inviting recruits because in the past a lot of recruits clearly only took the visit as a paid vacation on the isles (hardly a surprise). Because of this June has heavily relied on what little home grown talent Hawaii has and on recruits which convinced him they really WANT to play at Hawaii. It worked this year, but it'll be near impossible to compete at a high level constantly this way.
