Best "Incident" in MWC History

Recommended Posts

One thing that the MWC is really lacking is history. Our programs have history, but the conference doesn't yet have 10 years of history. I have to say that in the history of the MWC one of my favorite incidents was during last year's Wyoming-Utah game. Conferences thrive on rivalries and it was a classic rivalry moment, first when Whittingham calls the onside kick with a huge lead, and topped off by Glenn full on giving Whittingham the bird. Sure it showed a lack of sportmanship on both sides, but it wasn't really an ugly incident. It is not like fans started rumbling, or hurling piss bombs. It was a heated moment that will go down in lore, but really no one was hurt by it. It just added fuel to the flames.

That is by far my favorite incident in the history of the MWC. It may be a little short sighted, but that is why I put the question to you. What is your favorite incident in the history of the MWC?

I would have to agree with Isola. That was classic. That is another reason I like Whit and Glenn...they are definite "personalities" that add some pizzaz to the conference.

Glenn...gives the bird, how great is that!

Whit...give him a reason to get his dander up and viola! ...onside kick when you're up by 100! Rest of you conference guys didn't get to hear Whit on the radio trying to spin it the next day or two after...but, finally, he gave in to his rational self and stated that he "probably shouldn't have done that"....still, classic.

Can't wait for the rematch in Laramie this year. How do those two top that?

1. In 2001, BYU takes the opening drive for a touchdown. On the ensuing kickoff, BYU onsides and recovers and proceeds to score another TD. In the same game in the 4th quarter with the game well in hand, TE Doug Jolley is re-inserted to break the MWC receiving yardage record - the PA guy announces the record. Fisher DeBerry does not take kindly to either of these actions. The next season (predictably) AFA kicks an onside kick after its first TD and proceeds to rout BYU.

2. UNLV after shutting Utah out last year doesn't really act like they've been there before. Mike Sanford cracks some jokes in the press conference and the UNLV running backs makes a comment to the effect that Utah defenders were just "throwing themselves at his feet." I'm not sure I want to be UNLV this season in RES. That one will get ugly early and I don't see Whittingham calling off the dogs.

3. After defeating UNLV in 2005, Mendenhall waits at midfield for Mike Sanford for what seems like ten or fifteen minutes. During this time, the TV cameras keep panning over to Bronco and he looks a little pissed.

4. Mike Sanford, after losing at Iowa State and refusing to accept that his team legitimately lost, pitches a fit and goes chasing into the locker room after anybody in authority who will listen. One of the more amusing videos out there on youtube.

I seem to have Mike Sanford issues. It's just when I think of "incidents", his image comes to mind a lot.

It definately would not have been complete without the bird. Without the bird it is just Whittingham running up the score, but Glenn didn't take it lying down. Plus he didn't just scratch at his eye with his middle finger, he put it right out there. In the end, no real harm done, just a little more motivation for the next game. Classic moment in MWC history.

The Air Force revenge is classic, and I too think Whittingham will have his pedal to the metal the whole game this year vs. UNLV. I know Wyoming would love to do the same to Utah this year, but I just don't know if they have the fire power. I would love to see the grudge match go in the Cowboys favor though. I just hope they keep the game clean, no cheap shots.

The Sanford meltdown was more of an embarrassing moment for the MWC, along with the MWCT fights. I think those are kind of black eyes for the conference. I think the bird and paybacks just show the fire in the conference.

The Cowboys certainly have the firepower, if they can just gel under the new OC Bob Cole. I see an exciting year for the Pokes, and there will be no cheap shots, just smash mouth football. I will be there for sure, I am starting to exercise my middle finger already :D

Air Force behaved abominably after beating TCU in overtime last year. It didn't get much press, but the Frogs remember it well and look forward to returning the favor in regulation.

Abominably even...? Wow. Since when was rushing the field abominable? I believe the AFA fans are quite respectful. Rushing the field in excitement after winning against a team like TCUis hardly 'abominable'

TCU will certainly get a chance at revenge. I really hope TCU can turn their program around this year. Theyve got plenty of talent.

Go Air Force!

I think the incident was more from the players, not the fans. I don't know exactly what it was-- the TCU coaches have mentioned it only in passing. I think TCU's players were really pissed at how AFA talked at the end of the game.

I think '08 will be a more "typical" season for TCU.

The Bird and the AFA-BYU incidcents were both great. The AFA-BYU feud went on for three years after that, so we'll have to see if the Wyo-utah incident can match it

Interesting. The thought of my guys doing that surprises and disappoints me a little if it's true. Especially considering how respectful TCU players usually are...

I hope TCU has a better season in '08. Im not completely convinced theyve bounced back...EVERY team thinks they've improved over the competition... We'll see SOON! :)

Go AIR FORCE!

Just pace yourself, you wouldn't want to get an overuse injury (of course there is always the medical redshirt) :D

Nothing to really say here.....except GO MWC!!
