Utah hits record season ticket mark

Close to 27,000 season tickets with another six weeks to sell.

I just want to say that last night I talked an old buddy in SLC into getting 3 season tickets for himself and his two sons. :D

In the past he has bought individual tickets to 3-4 of the 6 (usually) Utah home games but, this year he realized that he would not be able to get good seats (or maybe any seats to the BYU game) if he did not get Season Tickets.

Congrats. Those are good numbers with a lot of July left and all of August for more to still sell.

I'll also add the reminder that this does not include the muss (the student section). Especially with BYU coming this year around 5000 tickets or more should be allocated their way. I know I've got 2 of them.

If we could get close to 35,000 tickets sold for each game before the season even starts thats a great place to be for Utah Football.

I have heard the MUSS has sold around 5000 season tickets as well. With visiting ticket alotments and the student section that are non muss, the place is filling up. Question- How many season tickets are your progams selling that are non student? I know BYU's is like 12.

Don't quote me as gospel but, this is what I understand:

There are about 7,000 seats in Utah's "student section."

They expect to have ~5,000 of those filled with MUSS members.

The U does NOT want to turn away any student so on several occasions some student were routed to the NEZ General Admission as Student overflow. There was one game last year in which the U "sold" close to 10,000 student tickets.

The baseline number for visitor tickets is 3,000 but most visiting teams won't use that many and some of those come back for distribution to the local public.

So you can do the math and for a big game like BYU you could have:

~30,000 season tickets (26,750 sold so far)

~10,000 Students (5,000 MUSS)

~ 3,000 Visitors

That is 43,000 tickets right there... You can see why people are saying single game BYU tickets may not even be sold to directly to the public this year.

I know that there are quite a few BYU fans that are buying up the more inexpensive Utah season ticket packages just to guarantee seats to the Holy War. All the more reason for Utah fans to grab those remaining season tickets before any BYU fans get them and force those cheap Zoobies into the waiting jaws of the scalpers . :P

There are literally Hundreds if not thousands of BYU fans picking up the cheap season tix to the Res, all in anticipation of the holy war.

They will just sell the others or not go, either way it is really driving up the season ticket sales for Res.

Of course having a decent team for the first time in 4 years helps, now we'll just have to see if the dirty utes can keep from melting down somewhere along the way. :o

Don't know if it's all about the Cougars, but I can tell you that there were years, many moons ago, when I lived in the Salt Lake Valley, that I did exactly that. I suspect they were much cheaper then. Seems to me you could my family seats for under a hundred bucks.

GO COUGARS!

Congrats to the Utes, that is impressive stuff. Are you guys doing anything differently this year marketingwise that is attracting better numbers, or is it just good buzz about the team?

Nothing really dramatic but, the UofU ticket office did do a few things differently this last year.

1) As soon as the regular season ended (in that run-up to the Bowl game) they started taking season ticket renewals...

2) In turn they opened up new Season Tickets sales much earlier in the summer than past years...

3) There has been some low key marketing to develop "clusters" within RES...

--A.)The UofU Alumni Association was given a block of tickets that they have marketed to the FUSS (Former Utah Students Section) it is open to anyone really but it is marketed as a "young alumni" version of the MUSS. The idea is that the younger (rowdier?) Alums can sit in their own section and not upset (or be upset by) the blue hairs.

--B.) The NEZ (North Endzone) has the cheapest Season tickets and "Red Zone" there has also developed a personality as the home of the "crazies." costumes, flags, and lots of smack from the crowd.

The idea is to give certain sections their own personality and at the same time allow fans to sit in areas that better fit their personalities. Separate the rowdy types from the family areas, that sort of thing.

4) This is a BYU year and that always helps but Utah has set a new Season Ticket record each of the last 4 years. I think a lot of it is just natural growth. However...

5) For the first time that I can recall Utah fans are thinking, "If I don't get season tickets my choices for individual game tickets are going to stink" so I think that a lot of people that would have bought 2-3 game tickets in past years are buying season tickets this year.

6) Part of that group in #5) are BYU fans, I don't know how many this really is but, I have heard several BYU fans admit to buying Utah season tickets so they have their Holy War tickets... They can sell unwanted tickets to secondary market or the schedule this year allows a BYU fan to catch the Oregon State @ Utah game and the TCU @ Utah game w/o conflicts with BYU football.

5. Based off of some of the numbers I have seen, you will be scrounging for decent single game tickets.

6. Even if you are not a BYU fan but just a college football fan in general: BYU/Utah, Oregon State/Utah, TCU/Utah...those are gonna hopefully be some nice fun games.
