SDSU is a team that is hard to really say. I think that they have always hated UCLA, but they started a nice little rivalry with FSU in the WAC days. I still think that SDSU's biggest rivalry is with BYU. There were some killer games in the past what give hope for the future.

Fresno State vs. San Diego State should be a no-brainer every year. Both schools could thrive off of this rivalry. Almost like a Bay Area vs. Southern Cal or SF vs. LA rivalry. San Diego, Las Vegas, Albuquerque, and Fresno would give the MWC a strong western presence in some pretty big cities (all 4 in the census top 50 in the USA).

"Should be..." Yeah, but there are a lot of "should be's" when it comes to the Aztecs. Right now, I'd have to say we're our own rival. Between the apathy of most students, the hatred from the academic side, and the litany of just plain stupid things that have happened to the Aztecs program? Yeah, we're our own worst enemy and our biggest rival.

Depends. Are you talking current rivalries or historic rivalries?

Currently, I think the idea in MWC circles is for us to manufacture a rivalry with UNLV. Logically they're supposed to be our in conference rival (doesn't mean they necessarily are, though).

Historically you can make the case for Fresno St. or BYU. I would say many Aztecs (and probably most Fresneckians) would say that this was our best rivalry (I know for a fact that Pat Hill absolutely HATES SDSU. He positively despised Tom Craft!). The schools hate each other so much that we stopped playing each other! But then again, there's the bitter acrimony with BYU, with that particular rivalry reaching its crescendo in the early to mid-90's. Beating BYU is always a major deal, and the BYU game to this day is viewed as the biggest game during the conference season. But, as has been mentioned, outside of the 90's, it's really been pretty one-sided won-loss wise. We know they don't consider us their biggest rival (for obvious reasons). Maybe during those few years they did, but..... (I recall something about a 52-52 game somewhere in the past? :P )

Which brings us back to UNLV, our nearest "travel partner," whom we really haven't built up a good, healthy hate for yet. It would sure be nice to get Fresno back on the sked, though.

SDSU rival = whoever the coach happens to be

Also, San Diego Chargers, USC Trojans, UCLA Bruins, Cal Bears, Fresno State Bulldogs, LA Lakers, San Francisco 49ers, and every other sports entity that makes Aztec sports irrelevant in California

"...started a nice little rivalry with FSU in the WAC days?" Not exactly. Fresno State and San Diego State have played each other 50 times -- only a few of which being while we were in the WAC together. San Diego State has played nobody else anywhere near 50 times.

After deleting some of my posts and closing the offending SteveAztec thread, a couple of elites have been able to open it long enough to respond to me anyway.  And since I can’t respond on a closed thread, here is my response…

Other than the initial inquiry, this has never been about letting Steve post again; I doubt that he even wants to post here.  My complaint is about his treatment on this board and the failure of admins to control attacks on him – and worse, to sometimes participate in those attacks.

Steve was first banned on the SDSU board.  When he was banned, it was a sufficiently controversial that they started what became an 8 page thread on the topic to justify the decision (https://aztecmesa.proboards.com/thread/9747/steve-aztec-longer-member-board).  It is clear that Steve had support in the community and there was some criticism for the Board Administrators for having failed to “expel the dozens of people who've been taunting him.”  (And take a look at the thread that I bumped; initially it was supporters happy about Steve getting a radio show.  Then the haters arrived.)

I can’t say if Steve took it too far in response, but I will say that he denies most of various accusations and adds important missing context to others.  But I wasn’t a party to any of the events and can’t say who is in the right and who is in the wrong.  And I have to admit that if half of what has been said about him is true, depending on context, I might well have banned him too.  Or more likely I might have banned those who were taunting him.  (Steve had lost a brother-in-law to suicide and there have been a number of memes of people blowing their brains out, as well as posts blaming Steve or his sister for the suicide – and admins apparently let it go.)

I am in no position to evaluate the truth or falsity of the laundry list of claims made on this board about how Steve responded to all this.  My complaint, however, is about his treatment on this board.  I may be wrong, but his banning on this board at least appears to have been less about what he did on this board and more a carryover from the SDSU banning.  The same taunting continued – more suicide memes – apparently ignored by the admins. Utenation supposedly posted the first and it is explained away because he didn’t know about the suicide.  But was the post taken down?  Was an apology issued?   Indeed, for years, admins on this board have allowed Steve to be vilified based on little more than anecdotal hearsay.  This is a privately owned board, but it is not a private board – anyone can join.  And more than that, It’s not an anonymous board; people know who Steve.  You have a duty to protect your posters from libelous statements and unproven allegations -- especially when, having been banned themselves, they have no ability to defend themselves.

Even Retrofade (who says he’s not a mod but can post to closed threads) put up a “blowing his brains out” meme several years ago.  He knew that Steve lost his brother-in-law to suicide, and he now says that “Steve is a mentally disturbed individual”, which is libelous by the way, but excuses his meme as nothing more than being in “poor taste”.  Apparently it is okay with the board's current admins to taunt a "mentally disturbed person" because the post has never been taken down.  The poster has never been admonished.  And there has been no apology, unless you consider "he deserved it" to be an apology.

In my view, you owe Steve an apology for the treatment that you have tolerated and, in some cases, engaged in.  A former Aztec board went out of business when sued (not by Steve).  It won’t be the last one.  You need to fix this.  You need to administer your board and prevent libelous and incendiary attacks -- hearsay-- on posters.

I'm torn between Fresno & UNLV. Historically... BYU based on the good 'ole days of WAC football. But not anymore, at least in my mind.

It's UNLV in basketball.

We no longer have any rival in football.

Boom goes the dynamite.

For me it is Fresno overall, and we need to renew this rivalry yesterday in all sports, not just football. In confernce, it would be UNLV, as we have had some good hoops games and lately there has been the yearly battle for the toilet bow in football which makes things interersting. I would also say most Aztec fans have a general dislike for the Tostidos from USD.

fresno state, or even san jose state, seem like natural rivals. there definitely is something between sdsu-ucla, but not on the football field, and no more than ucla-lbsu or csuf. but i voted for BYU. SDSU just doesn't have a top rival in-conference: UNLV in basketball, but no more than UNM, BYU or Utah.

but i think the fresno state rivalry is the ultimately should-be rivalry: the two top cal states, a little twist on NorCal / SoCal (which is usually dominated by Bay Area / LA), urban / rural, etc. Stoking some rivalry there probably helps both schools across-the-board: basketball, football, baseball. I think that if Fresno joined the MWC, SDSU's profile and recruiting would increase in several sports.

Fresno and SDSU are stupid for not having this game scheduled for the last game of the season every year. Nevada and UNLV should also play late in the season. AFA plays Army and Navy during mid to late season in OOC play and so should you.

UNLV and SDSU could then play early on in the season when most of the other MWC members are playing and OOC game.

SDSU and UNLV don't really have natural rivals in the conference so they should play them OOC like AFA does.

Fresno needs to play SDSU because it gives them a good, respectable team to play where they don't have to play the 2-1 bodybag games that they like to play.

I like the idea of having Fresburg as the last game every year. That would add to the history we have very quickly.

...but they started a nice little rivalry with FSU in the WAC days...

STARTED IN THE WAC DAYS!? SDSU and FSU first hooked horns in 1923 and played every year from 1945 to 1979, most notably as members of the PCAA. They reprised the rivalry, after a 12 year hiatus, when Fresno joined the WAC in 1992 but the rivalry began LONG before that. SDSU has played FSU 50 times, its most played opponent, and holds a 26-20-4 edge in the series but the two schools haven

I like this idea. It would be pretty cool, actually playing a rival during Rivalry Week. And if the Fresno fans still travel like they did back in the '90's, it would be a great atmosphere for the game (assuming more than 15k Aztec fans show up).
