Fresno State wins tough regional!!!

Recommended Posts

I know -- this is a MWC board. And no, I haven't posted this to a WAC board (where I assume others have). But Fresno State beat #6 San Diego for the second time to win the Long Beach regional and I just wanted to brag a little.

I don't think most of us expected to do well. Our ace -- a presumptive first round pick in the upcoming draft -- was out and we were the number 4 seed -- the only unranked team in the regional. But we pulled it out and I'm just pleased as punch that we did. Unexpected victories are always sweet.

So it's on to Tempe for another weekend. Go Dogs!

After deleting some of my posts and closing the offending SteveAztec thread, a couple of elites have been able to open it long enough to respond to me anyway.  And since I can’t respond on a closed thread, here is my response…

Other than the initial inquiry, this has never been about letting Steve post again; I doubt that he even wants to post here.  My complaint is about his treatment on this board and the failure of admins to control attacks on him – and worse, to sometimes participate in those attacks.

Steve was first banned on the SDSU board.  When he was banned, it was a sufficiently controversial that they started what became an 8 page thread on the topic to justify the decision (https://aztecmesa.proboards.com/thread/9747/steve-aztec-longer-member-board).  It is clear that Steve had support in the community and there was some criticism for the Board Administrators for having failed to “expel the dozens of people who've been taunting him.”  (And take a look at the thread that I bumped; initially it was supporters happy about Steve getting a radio show.  Then the haters arrived.)

I can’t say if Steve took it too far in response, but I will say that he denies most of various accusations and adds important missing context to others.  But I wasn’t a party to any of the events and can’t say who is in the right and who is in the wrong.  And I have to admit that if half of what has been said about him is true, depending on context, I might well have banned him too.  Or more likely I might have banned those who were taunting him.  (Steve had lost a brother-in-law to suicide and there have been a number of memes of people blowing their brains out, as well as posts blaming Steve or his sister for the suicide – and admins apparently let it go.)

I am in no position to evaluate the truth or falsity of the laundry list of claims made on this board about how Steve responded to all this.  My complaint, however, is about his treatment on this board.  I may be wrong, but his banning on this board at least appears to have been less about what he did on this board and more a carryover from the SDSU banning.  The same taunting continued – more suicide memes – apparently ignored by the admins. Utenation supposedly posted the first and it is explained away because he didn’t know about the suicide.  But was the post taken down?  Was an apology issued?   Indeed, for years, admins on this board have allowed Steve to be vilified based on little more than anecdotal hearsay.  This is a privately owned board, but it is not a private board – anyone can join.  And more than that, It’s not an anonymous board; people know who Steve.  You have a duty to protect your posters from libelous statements and unproven allegations -- especially when, having been banned themselves, they have no ability to defend themselves.

Even Retrofade (who says he’s not a mod but can post to closed threads) put up a “blowing his brains out” meme several years ago.  He knew that Steve lost his brother-in-law to suicide, and he now says that “Steve is a mentally disturbed individual”, which is libelous by the way, but excuses his meme as nothing more than being in “poor taste”.  Apparently it is okay with the board's current admins to taunt a "mentally disturbed person" because the post has never been taken down.  The poster has never been admonished.  And there has been no apology, unless you consider "he deserved it" to be an apology.

In my view, you owe Steve an apology for the treatment that you have tolerated and, in some cases, engaged in.  A former Aztec board went out of business when sued (not by Steve).  It won’t be the last one.  You need to fix this.  You need to administer your board and prevent libelous and incendiary attacks -- hearsay-- on posters.

Congrats, I was surprised when I saw Fresno State put in the bracket as a 4 seed. They deserved a 3 seed IMO, but that does not matter because it is on to the Supers for the Bulldogs.

Arizona State will be a very tough match up.

I think ASU was ranked #1 at one time this year, and I believe they outscored their opponents in the regional, 36-2 :o

Make sure you post your WAC(ky) results on this (MWC) board after the thumpin' you take in Tempe.

No, I don't think so... It would make me bitter -- and if there is one thing that I can't stand, it's bitter people. ;)

No offense to fresno but ASU is going to slaughter the bulldogs. ASU is hands down the best team in the country, nevermind the rankings. Easily the best offense in the game and their pitching has improved greatly from earlier in the season.

I don't believe anyone posted that ASU wasn't a good team. Not to mention they play at home, on a field where the ball carries well, with a short porch in right, and a line up loaded with lefties. :o

If yer hinting with your little "LOL" that I'm bitter, I'm not. I'm just not interested. I guess it would be akin to me posting on the WAC board (something I've never done since my school isn't in that conference- go figure) that SDSU just finished 14th in the nation in Men's golf. Did you post the Bulldogs' result on the C-USA, Big East, and ACC message boards as well? (there- a little smiley thing for sarcasm)

P.S. I know its a two-way street as well. I'm sure there are plenty of MWC posters over at the WAC site, I just don't know why

No Andre, I wasn't hinting that you are bitter. The joke was on me. I've been accused many times (and have admitted to the charge) that I am bitter over the MWC split from the WAC -- not so much that it happened but the way that it happened.

Sorry for the lack of clarity.

Fresno did (in 1 year) what tcu has never done. Super regionals! How long will it take for tcu? 2011? The tcu pitching/recruiting is getting better.

The media has continued to kiss tcu's azz! The media says that tcu gave a good effort. Every team is suppose to give a good effort. The bottom line is there was no progress/super regional.

Don't get discouraged, Robert. You could be SDSU. We have the most famous head baseball coach in the country. He's an icon whose team plays in a stadium deservedly named for him. Unfortunately, however, as great of a player as the guy was, he's that bad of a coach.

Boom goes the dynamite.

The Bulldogs need to be in this conference, period! I know Yoda says he doesn't want it but it would benefit both parties and would certainly make this a much better baseball conference among other things. We need to make this happen, 10 teams with Fresno State and I'm a happy Aztec fan.

Okay, It's one and one, whoever wins tonight moves on to the CWS :D Sure wish our ace was ptiching, but has been out for the last 3-4 weeks with a stress fracture. Was drafted 46th or 48th in the draft, even with the injury, and I doubt he will risk further injury with guaranteed money on the table. Should be fun

Fresno has been to 3 CWS in their history, so Fresno did a long time ago what TCU has never done. If I were to have to make a guess for a year that TCU will finally make the supers I would say 2010, but that all depends on what juniors stay after the 09 season. Trust me Robert, I am just as dissapointed as you are that TCU has not made it out of a regional. But like the SDSU fan said, it could be a lot worse.

Add the following three

Fresno: good football program, good baseball program, good softball program, average basketball

Houston: solid football program, good baseball program, solid basketball, good softball

Boise: good football program, above average women's basketball, average men's basketball

Plus all three schools have solid teams in some of the olympic sports

That's pretty much everyone's assumption -- because ASU is incredibly good. They had 17 players drafted off this team last week, score over 10 runs a game, and go into the series something like 39-3 at home.

BUT...

After losing the first game 12-4, Fresno State won last night 8-6 in a real nailbiter and has extended the series until tonight. I figure if we extend the series to three games, then it wasn't a "slaughter" -- no matter what happens tonight.

Unfortunately, at age 56, I may have to pitch as we haven't got a lot left. But what the hell -- maybe we've got a half dozen guys who can do an inning and a third each. You can't win if you don't get there and we are there, with a chance to win (however remote). I'm thinking that next04 (among others, including me) didn't think this series would go three games. So I'm happy...
