  1. I like Putnam. @grandjean87 loaned(gave) me "upswing" a few years ago. "Bowling Alone" was published right at the end of an era and before a new one. 90's kids did not grow up with a cell phone and facebook. Zennials did. The first ever generation to go through puberty with social media.
  2. Yeah. I don't fear my own death. I believe it's not the end. I believe that in the bottom of my soul. I fear the death of my loved ones because I don't wan't to live life without them. I fear the loss of my mind, and the loss of my body, and the pain that comes with dying. Not the death part.
  3. If half the rumors from that time are true let alone the facts like this, HBO should buy the rights lol....
  4. That's a good point and aligns with some modern sociological theory regarding isolated groups.
  5. Yes. I am sure stuff like this is happening. It is tragic and those are monsters doing it. War is +++++ing hell. It's a bunch of young men with weapons meant to deal death facing other young men with the same, day after day and night after night. +++++ing hell. Atrocities happen in every war and they are not forgivable. However to make the claims you and others are making, you are stating this is a feature not a symptom of the IDF and Israel's war against Hamas. You need to claim this to claim genocide. You are wrong. It is not. This is EVIDENCED by the FACTS. The civilian to militant death ration of 1:1.5 is remarkable given the reality of the situation. Unheard of in normal circumstances in modern urban war, let alone the completely unique ones of this. The IDF has gone through extensive steps to limit civilian casualties, no other army in the history of modern war has ever gone through such length steps that would harm their military aim, and the military aim of the IDF, the destruction of Hamas, is a just one. The only one viable. The fact is, yes, innocent people are dying in Gaza. I am sure some soldiers have killed people in cold blood. That is war. That is what happens in war. War inevitably leads to evil acts, always. My heart breaks for those suffering. The IDF by EVERY MEASURE though has done a remarkable job in limiting civilian casualties as much as possible. Maybe to the point it ultimately is causing more suffering because it allows HAMAS to further kill their babies and move their leaders and hostages.... Now back the facts again you little terrorist: The militant to civilian death ration is what it is, and that is IIIIIIIFFFFFF you believe HAMAS, which you should not The militant to death ratio according to Hamas of roughly 1:1.5 is the lowest in urban warfare history, by leaps and bounds the Average ration is 1:8 or 1:9 When you include this with the FACTS that Hamas is embedded so deeply into the civilian infrastructure, that they hid in civilian clothing among refugees, that they surround their leaders with babies sleeping next to them.... ........the only reasonable conclusion is that the IDF is taking extreme measure to keep the civilian to militant death ration so low. These measure have never been taken or considered by any army, ever Yes, war is hell and in war atrocities happen. The Palestinians are responsible for the war as it stands right now. Period. Full stop. There was a cease fire and it was violated in the most brutal way by mandate of the Palestinian people.
  6. @BSUTOP25 would you agree with this kind of simplistic breakdown? Late 70s through the 90s white nationalists, militants, and antigovernment movements, individuals and families move to Northern Idaho for all the reasons listed earlier Long drawn out legal battles finally result in these groups relocating but enough remained to keep that culture alive in the underbelly for years their kids in the 90's and aughts took up the mantel of their skin head parents in an underbelly with a culture of drug use (meth primarily) and sales. Keeping them viable. The above was all more or less known and not that atypical of small rural towns really...at least on the surface.... Recently the concern many have is the "unite the right" shit where it seems all right wing takes no matter how extreme are better than any moderation, at all. Right at costs. Unite it. This created a hush hush *wink wink* where "yeah this person is bat shit and yeah her supporters have some Nazis but the left is a much bigger threat. FREDOOM!!! Seems that is where are at. That is where the danger lies in Idaho politics. That is where Idahoans have indeed failed. That is why I am just fine if it seems Idaho is "going extra" in their response to this. That's a positive sign.
  7. Yep. A significant portion of the population is dependent on income that comes in for a few small windows a year. And guess what, the #vanlife #hotspringsoftheorld fly fishing, kayaking, granola eating beard having, lesbian experimenting yuppies that make up those dollars tend to be socially conscious. Two dudes in trucks not only terrorized young black women, they kicked the hard working, struggling people in the nuts they claim to try to be saving or whatver.
  8. I think there is more too it. I've seen it. The work of Dr. Suart Hameroff and Sir Rodger Penrose on quantum consciousness is fascinating. @TheSanDiegan and I have talked at lengths about in on here before. How and why does the wave function collapse when observed? What is so special about conscious observation? Can consciousness become quantumly entangled with the surrounding fabric of space time? What are the natures of the extra dimensions postulated in string and M theory? We don't really know, nor do we know if our laws of physics would be similar inside say a looped string dimension? We are learning more and more how much we do not know about the Big Bang Theory. In fact, the scientific community has never been more fractured on the origin of the universe, which is EXCITING!!! I know enough to know I know nothing, which leaves open so much.
  9. The other thing to consider is just how much this bad publicity is going to hurt the lower socioeconomic class of Northern Idaho dependent on the service industry. A lot of lodges have people book from all over the world. World class outdoor recreation opportunities literally draw people from everywhere. One University in China sends 30 something odd students to the Lochsa every year for rafting and hot springs. Motorcyclists have these roads on their bucket lists. Anglers from Europe and New York let alone other Western States flood the world class trout streams. Hunters will book years in advance. The economic impact of such bad publicity will be felt.
  10. I think we are having a good discussion here right now. I did not like the broad bush of the OP and others in condemning Idaho, but it seems like there are people genuinely curious about the complexities and realities that face Northern Idaho when it comes to our battles with racism, which is actually more unique than many places in the West. I think this is a good conversation now, could you do me the favor of keeping it on this vein? It's an ask, not a demand of course, if you don't want to that's fine too.
  11. Oh yeah. It is crazy right wing. I did not express that clearly. But the state level power brokers seem to be just slightly south of them, and then again elbow to south and east. There is huge money moving into the area. Right and Left wing. But it's not more skin heads. They can't afford it. I guess that is my point. Northern Idaho is an escape for people with money, left or right, currently. And those people don't want +++++ing skin heads around.
  12. There is nuance to it that the OP was lacking that I hope @BSUTOP25, @bornontheblue and myself were able to add. There is history here that makes it a headline to condemn "Idaho" however unfairly. It's not Idahos fault that skin heads around the world decided to make Hayden lake their capitol in the 80s. We were in legal and often literal fights with them until we won. It is not Idaho's fault the ones who stayed raised little +++++ing skin head sons and daughters, who recruited others. It is Idaho's fault for allowing that to marry into mainstream politics, by slowly becoming less and less distressed by more and more radical candidates for office, and then those candidates winning elections. This shit terrifies folks like top25, Born and myself who can hardly be called leftists.
  13. First part good. Second part bad. A lot of the political power in Northern Idaho is liberal. You get the far right crazy as you go further south actually. From the Prairie to Mormon country. CDA; Moscow, Sandpoint, the power central of North Idaho are not far right, at all. The South Central Idaho Wackos are real scary, but separate from the issues in the panhandle with the Skin Head legacy.
  14. Northern Idaho will never be able to completely remove the tumor that is Nazism. It is inoperable. We waged political war on them and won, and the vast majority left the area. Like a toxic spill though, it will linger. So what can we do? We can make sure when a black woman gets called ++++++ in one of our towns and makes them feel afraid for their safety, they don't get let off with a public shaming. They get the full force of our resources and our lobbying to the FBI for more, to put these +++++er in jail for a bit. It's not ok in our small northern towns. That is the consensus in those towns.
  15. My last point is the contention "why don't the good people of Idaho kick them out" That many of you fine people have made. Why not indeed? It seems crazy? Well, we did. The good people of Northern Idaho fought tooth and nail to kick them out and succeeded. The Institute for the Study of War states that no matter what, 10% of any population will never leave despite any external factors. Weather these factors be looming tropical storms, military forces or mandates. 10% will never leave unless they die. Period. That's about what happened in Northern Idaho. It had become THE hotbed for Neo Nazis around the globe. The capital of it. We kicked their +++++ing skin head asses out as best we could but their tendrils are impossible to remove completely and when left untreated and exposed to the stimuli that allowed the mastization to happen ion the first place, it can violently erupt and spread. Idaho has the responsibility given our history to react as forcefully within the law as we can. That is why our agencies are taking this so seriously and have the FBI involved. One side you can say "that's just Idaho" and you would be correct. However you would also have to acknowledge "that's just Idaho" in how seriously we are treating this. This is a HUGE deal locally. Not sure it would be in many other states. That's just Idaho
