OT: American Sniper

Recommended Posts

Went to go see American Sniper this weekend. Great movie and Bradley Cooper did an amazing job portraying Chris Kyle. Besides the quality of the acting and the fact that the storyline itself is powerful, the thing that amazed me the most was that after the movie ended (and after the credits with the actual footage), the entire theater got up and exited in complete silence. I was at a huge theater and it was sold out and you could hear a pin drop. I've never witnessed that at a movie before.

Anybody see it and, if so, did you notice the same thing?

Exactly the same thing happened at the theater where I was. No one said a word with credits rolling. It was quite somber. I thought it was a brilliantly done film. It is the first movie I've seen that shows the effect deployments have on the family. Without runining the film, It also shows how Chris was after coming back with PTSD. If you have a wife/significant other it's especially poignant. I don't get seriously thinking about many films easily, but this one made me step back and think. I'm still thinking about it today. It made me realize what a tough job it is for a group of marines to patrol streets and storm homes essentially as sitting ducks. I appreciate our armed forces even more.

There are only two things I can't stand in this world: people who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.

I haven't seen it yet, but I'm hearing a lot of the above from other people.

Also add quite a bit of sniffling.

Michael Moore and Seth Rogen don't seem impressed:

My uncle killed by sniper in WW2. We were taught snipers were cowards. Will shoot u in the back. Snipers aren't heroes. And invaders r worse

American Sniper kind of reminds me of the movie that's showing in the third act of Inglorious Basterds.

Our goals should be to impress film makers and actors. Goll I despise MM's opinions.

Michael Moore complaining about an Uncle being killed a decade before he was born is stupid.

++++ Michael Moore. All he does is sit on his fat liberal arse and criticize the very people that provide him with the freedom to get rich pandering to a bunch of left wing fairies and drama queens. He's lucky that he lives in a society where all he has to do is whine like a fat biotch and eat donuts.

He's a piece of shiot.

Guess what, Moore doesn't speak for liberals, just for himself...and most likely he's mad Eastwood has another hit, while Moore can't draw flies.

If you want to politicize the movie, fine...but saying stupid BS like "bunch of left wing fairies and drama queens." just makes you sound as ignorant as Moore.

Well, he sure as hell isn't pandering to the right wing, moderates, or anyone else. He's too liberal for most liberals. No one said he speaks for liberals. I said he panders to the extreme left. He does.

Definitely a powerful story. I did think that they had a somewhat uncomplicated treatment of Kyle that did weaken the narrative's potential. Later on in the war, he began to view himself as a Christian Crusader fighting against a religion that inspired hatred against those who didn't share his views. I've read almost a chapter of such a section and it seems to me that he was a bit hate-filled or at least warped. I think this coupled with his black-and-white thought (which is touched on but not given much attention) really would have added depth to the movie, and shown Kyle for what he was: a complicated case where hard-and-fast characterizations don't really hold up. Of course, it's easier to compress those issues into a scene or two and to lionize the guy. I'm also very close to a marine that fought in Fallujah during some of its hottest days. The stories he tells me don't really correspond with what we see in the movie at all.

There have been questions about how accurate some of Kyle's stories are, and he lost a defamation case to Jesse Ventura for made-up incidents in his memoir. Other stories, such as the incident at the gas station in the memoir (not going to spoil), have been proven false.

This is a good movie with strong characters. However, I couldn't help but feel disturbed at some of the omissions.

I look forward to seeing the movie.  But I thought Chris Kyle acted in extremely poor taste by parading himself around as some kind of hero and glorifying his kills with his book and never ending media appearances.  My entire family is military and were disgusted by his victory parade.  There is no glory in killing the enemy.  Both my father and my grandfather saw combat and killed a few enemies during their time in the service.  The last thing they would do is try to glorify it, or speak about it, or claim hero status over it.  Some may say that karma worked it's magic, and honestly I wouldn't really argue with that.

Quit being a hater. Your family dealt with it one way, and he dealt with it another way. Karma?
