Lon Kruger has a potential elite 8 team

Recommended Posts

Maybe it just wasn't a good fit for him at the school?

Good point... A lot of UNLV fans - at least on the interebs - seem to have been seduced by the icing (CLC's promise of bringing the "running" back to the Running' Rebs) rather than the cake (solid fundamentals, defense- first, good X's and O's kind of guy).

Kruger is a great coach of his players, no doubt. I was constantly disappointed by his recruiting classes a whole lot though during his tenure. Anthony Marshall I believe was the top recruit (Forget 5 star Beas Hamga or whatever his name is that played like 26 minutes with the team.)

The starting lineup is ridiculous, one of best in country, bench is a bit weak but they are loaded. Any bitterness from UNLV fans?

elite eight?

eh, we'll see

they could very well be in the elite 8, i have heard that a couple even have them in the final four..make no mistake, unlv fans are very grateful to kruger for the job he did in elevating the program from where it had been for far too long, and he brought tarkanian back into the program, so there's that. but the last couple of years he was at unlv, although his defense was great, (and he had the players to execute it, i.e., marshall, hawkins, etc) his offense had become pass, pass, pass, shoot. add that to his half hearted efforts to recruit (the thought of 2 bigs on the floor at once got us excited), by the time the rebs got laughed off the floor by illinois at the ncaa tournament, i think a lot of us were ready for a change. and we didn't blame him for taking double the salary. maybe he's working harder now because he feels like he should earn it, who knows? but anyway, i wish him good luck, he is still in vegas often and still participates in a few local events. i have no ill will for him, i just would have liked to have seen the same effort applied here.

unlv was upset with his inability to attract consistent talent so they fired him for a guy that is unable to coach consistent talent

such is the life of a unlv basketball fan

fwiw, his teams were always overachievers at unlv

Kruger is a master at getting more out of less............he's done it at every job he's had.

I own a vehicle likely worth more than everything you own combined and just flew first class (including a ticket for a 2 1/2 year old), round trip to Las Vegas and I'm not 35 yet. When you accomplish something outside of finishing a book, let me know. When's the last time you saw a 2 year old fly first class in their own seat? Don't tell me about elite.

fired... quit... whatever

doesn't change the point i'm making

He was moderately disliked by a small segment of fans. I don't think anyone has hard feelings towards him.

I'm not sure that is 100% true.  He had what should have been a Final Four team at Kansas State that lost to an inferior Kansas team in the Elite 8.  He recruited a Final Four team at Illinois, but left for the NBA.  He had a Final Four team at Florida.  His talent level has been pretty elite at every stop other than UT-Pan American and UNLV.

Lon Kruger's heart was not at UNLV and if you didn't noticed you had no eyes.

His attitude was, " That's what you get for the $$ you pay me" . UNLV pays peanuts for Rice, assistant coach material at best and it shows any way you look at it, his decent recruiting magnifies his ineptness. The only hope for the program is a new President that will actually care for the athletics, as of now UNLV is in a free fall.

"Fired, quit".... he turned down several offers before he got the one that couldn't be refused - the one that paid his assistants at the level that head coaches are paid in the MWC.  LK still has close ties to the LV community and spends quite a bit of time here.  He's no "Alford".

I don't personally know of any Rebel fans who have bitterness toward LK.
