Ok MWC fans. This is for everybody. I know it is not a poll about who will win out. This is mnore for CFB fans and there opinions on what Offenses they like to watch.

I think BYU should run the I-formation a whole hell lot more then they have. I said this from last year. BYU has the hogs up front and the RB's to make this more of a power formation team, then the spread that Anae likes to run. This poll does not mean I think Anae isn't doing a grat job, but I think the coaches were to stubborn, to not do the I-formation against Tulsa. I think if BYU would of done this, BYU would of won the game.

So much can be ran out of the I-formation. Paly action pass, sweeps, dives, off tacke, counter traps, lineman pulling for a sweep, even an option.

Play action pass, with the WR's, TE, fly patterns to the RB's...

Against NM, BYU ran agaisnt them better running out of the I-formation. Matter of fact, I think it was 11 times for 68 yards. That is an average of 6 yards a carry.

It is of my belief, if BYU would do this more often, they could win out in conference again this year. They would be very hard to beat. Mix in some shot-gun formations, pass out of that, or run some miss-directions, or draws.

But, I think I-formation is our best bet. The thing with the I-formation, a team has to be pactient, and read the blockers and the holes. I just don't think BYU has the speed to run out of the Shot-gun at all. Sometimes it can work.

Also, there was one play with Unga, against NM. He went in motion out of the shot-gun, for a wheel route, and had a nice pitch fromhall, for a nice gain. I would like to see more screens as well. Screens would of slowed down Tulsa, and NM, from blitzing so much...

I am interested in a good topic of football talk. I am sure there will be different opinons, and I am interested in reading these.

UNM's blitzes were hitting the gaps when they rushed out of the 2-back set. I think that tweaked the yards per carry numbers.

I'd like BYU to pass more out of the I myself. They have to run in pass formations for it to work.

Go Cougars

The offensive scheme is not what lost the game at Tulsa and I don't know why people still talk about that. It was the bad game planning with the defense that lost that game and Bronco even mentioned that. Our offense did their job to win a football game, the defense didn't. I don't know a whole lot about football but I do know that Dr. Anae knows more than a bunch of talking heads on the radio. Sure our running game could improve and probably would running the I, but Anae's offense is about the spread, and how it is set up makes it a very dangerous passing offense. If we abandoned the spread to run the I then our running game might improve but our passing game wouldn't be nearly as strong. We have shown that running the spread is enough to win football games and have a balanced running attack as long as the defense is doing their job as well, (see 2006). This is just my opinion but I think the problem with the run game this year is with the Oline. This group was hyped to be one of BYU's best lines ever and so far has been a HUGE disappointment. I don't know how many false starts Aulai needs until he remembers how well he did last year at center. I have no idea why Oswald is still starting after watching him get beat on just about every play causing Max to be rushed into throwing the ball away or getting slammed from behind. Is the loss of Grimes the difference between last year's line and this year's? The spread takes everyone on offense to execute properly but once it gets rollin, there's no defense that will stop it. I trust Anae.

Should BYU run out of the I-formation?

Primarily? Against all defenses, and not just the 3-3-5? Even if the opponent stacks the box against the run?

NO.

I was screaming at the TV that night and discussing it with my father that Anae should of called a screen or two in the NM game to get them not to blitz so often but he didn't. I love Anae and what he has brought to the team and I love the spread, the problem as I see it is right now we are getting burned bad on the outside Oswald especially was getting burned in the NM game and until that gets fixed the spread right now is going to have its problems. Would I like to see them run out of the I a little more yes but not too much, the way I see it is were giving up to much of our offence if we did that but of course that's JMO. That being said it seems like Anae seems kind of robotic sometimes and when he gets in that groove you don't see alot of plays being mixed up, but we definitly need more screens, but of course that's JMHO.

GO COUGS!!!!!!!!!

Interesting feed back.

The Tulsa loss, yes was partly becasue of the defense, but if the offense can control the clock, then BYU wins that game. I disagree with snowbirdjunkie on that.

BYU can't keep up with teams in a shoot-out. Smash Mouth football, will win it for BYU.

BYU abandoned the run too early in the second half of the Tulsa game IMO. The one drive BYU pounded the ball to the tune of 5+ ypc the whole way up the field and then Anae got cute and abondoned it and Max Hall threw an INT. Then it seemed to me like BYU never went back to it. Anae needs to learn to stick with what's working. We saw the same thing in the UNM game where it was obvious that running out of the I was working as opposed to the shotgun. Why he doesn't stick with things that work until the opposition stops it is beyond me. I guess he's still growing into the OC role but his play-calling really baffles me sometimes. It's hard to argue with the results he's brought to the BYU offense the past 2+ years but that doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement.

Excactly my point. I am not saying Anae isn't doing a great job, but like you, I am baffled at why they don't keep doing the I-formation. Bronco needs to look at those numbers and ease his offensive cordinator back to reality a bit.

Agrred, I can't argue with the winniing, but man, it can go South in a hurry if egos get in the way.
