  4. SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. (UNLVRebels.com) - Kalib Boone scored 16 points and Justin Webster added 11, but the UNLV men's basketball team had its season come to an end with a 91-68 NIT quarterfinal loss to Seton Hall Wednesday night at Walsh Gymnasium. It was UNLV's second trip to New Jersey in less than a week, as it played a first-round game at Princeton last Wednesday before defeating Boston College at home on Sunday. The Runnin' Rebels (21-13) finished the season with 21 wins, which are the most for the program since the 2012-13 season. The NIT also marked UNLV's first postseason appearance in 11 years and it recorded its first postseason win in 16 years. Keylan Boone, Brooklyn Hicks and Rob Whaley Jr. all added nine points for UNLV against the Pirates, with Whaley Jr. recording a game-high-tying seven rebounds, Keylan adding six and Kalib five. Kalib was 8 of 10 from the field and Keylan added three steals. Seton Hall (23-12), which advanced to the NIT semifinals in Indianapolis with the victory, had all five starters score in double figures, led by Al-Amir Dawes' 21 points on 8 of 16 from the field. Kadary Richmond shot 7 of 9, scoring 16 points with 10 assists, no turnovers and five steals. STAT OF THE GAME: Seton Hall shot 56.5% from the field (35 of 62) and 44.0% on 3-pointers (11 of 25). COSTLY RUN: Seton Hall used a 7-0 run to end the first half and made three 3-pointers to start the second half, extending a 37-26 lead to its largest of the game at 53-26 with 18 minutes to go. QUOTABLE: "We got in a hole in the first half, which was tough to dig out of against a really good team like that. Our guys kept fighting and trying to claw back. There was a lot of positivity in the huddles and a belief that we could make a quick run. We had good offensive possessions, but we couldn't quite do it on the other end where we could get a string of stops together. But it wasn't for a lack of care or anything like that, we just dug ourselves too big of a hole at the beginning of each half which proved to be the difference." - UNLV head coach Kevin Kruger. OTHER NOTES: - UNLV finished the season winning 12 of its final 16 games. - UNLV went 0-9 on 3-pointers in the first half, but made 5 of 12 over the final 20 minutes (41.7%). - The Runnin' Rebels made 54.8% of their shots in the second half (17 of 31), finishing the game at 44.4% (28 of 63). - Seton Hall made 8 of 14 3-pointers in the second half (57.1%). - UNLV led in rebounding, 32-31. - UNLV's bench outscored Seton Hall's 33-17. - Seton Hall led at halftime, 44-26. - UNLV was again without Luis Rodriguez, who is attending to a family matter, and Jalen Hill, who suffered a season-ending ACL injury in January. - UNLV has made at least one 3-pointer in a NCAA-record 1,227 straight games.
  5. UTEP has history with a good amount of MWC programs from the old WAC days...........it's within the MWC footprint ..........BB could be good there in a decent conference Not really sure what the fascination / value is from getting the 6th to 9th ranked (in terms of TX pecking order) does for the MWC ............if the Texas fetish is that strong, then the MWC needs to go big & almost create a TX centric division by adding UTEP / UTSA / TX St / N Tx 7 maybe NMSU for their proximity and old ties to many MWC programs Maybe the MWC should go big & capture everything in the west not in the B10/B12/ACC.............at this point we aren't getting into the big boys club, so might as well create a western centric conference that could stand alone with 4 divisions in two conferences inside the MWC/PAC name plate basically a 4 division conference with 5 to 6 teams per division
  6. For many just getting a Texas based school not located in El Paso is the great goal to make the MWC Great Again -- Personally I'm not convinced taking the 6th to 8th Texas based option just because the school is located in Texas is the best strategy They say it's about recruiting.......but most MWC programs are going to be the 4th to 6th option for any TX based recruit...........and it's not like the MWC programs don't already recruit Texas -- UNLV WBB has 5 of 14 roster posts filled by Texans without ever playing a game in Texas
  7. As the article I posted above in this thread......UNLV was loose as a team.........didn't think they'd show up this loose..........that was like a pick up game from the UNLV side -- Not much to hang a hat on from this game other than the season is over and we know can turn our attention to who's staying, going and coming in I have the game on DVR & am behind real time .......where I'm at the score is SH 60 UNLV 38..........and from looking at the final score it's just SH 31 UNLV 30 from the 13:50 point on Key Boone might have had more air balls than shots that hit the rim.........lots of errant passes & overall crappy shooting
  8. From this article, there seems to be no tension or pressure in the UNLV locker room, the players are having fun & rolling with it https://lasvegassun.com/news/2024/mar/27/no-worries-for-unlv-basketball-as-carefree-nit-run/ No worries for UNLV basketball as carefree NIT run continues The UNLV basketball team is learning that lesson right now, as a pressure-free NIT run has unlocked a joyful style of play and led the Scarlet and Gray to a quarterfinal matchup against Seton Hall on Wednesday (4 p.m., ESPN2). Head coach Kevin Kruger couldn’t help but notice the mood of his team, which has now won 12 of its last 15 contests. “They’re playing hard, and they’re having fun with it,” Kruger said. “They know each day is a great opportunity to get a little more work in, another day with everybody and another day to play basketball.” Given a chance to exhale, UNLV has rediscovered the joy of ball in NIT victories over Princeton and Boston College. “The main thing with us in the locker room was just telling everyone to have fun,” freshman guard D.J. Thomas said. “Don’t put any pressure on yourself. If we have fun and just keep playing basketball how we’re playing, everything is going to take care of itself.” The easygoing attitude was evident in the second half against Boston College. When the game got tight, UNLV responded with a series of big plays to put it away, including a highlight alley-oop dunk by Kalib Boone on a beautiful pass from Thomas. But it was the team’s only turnover that had the players in stitches on Monday. After practice, Thomas and junior forward Rob Whaley shared a laugh about an errant pass by senior forward Keylan Boone — the lone giveaway that spoiled a potentially historic zero-turnover effort. “It was upsetting,” Whaley chuckled, “but from how it happened, I can’t say anything about it because it was hilarious. I was standing right there, and I just watched him throw it right to the guy, and I was like, ‘Good pass, Key.’” True to their newfound sunny disposition, UNLV shrugged off the miscue and Boone came back with a big shot moments later. “Things like that happen,” Whaley said. “You get back on defense and just get it back. Luckily he got it back for us, he hit the 3 from the logo.” Whaley believes that lighthearted but serious approach is doing wonders for UNLV as the team continues to extend its first postseason appearance since 2013. “That’s just how we are,” Whaley said. “We have fun with everything we do. From practice to stretching to film to weights, everything we do is us having fun. But locked in. It’s like, we’re locked in first, have fun second.” Cross-country flights on short notice are generally understood to be a nightmare, but Whaley and his teammates see the bright side. “There’s nothing better than traveling with your brothers and going on. This is a great group of guys. An interesting group of guys. The most interesting group of guys I’ve ever met, personally. It’s just fun. We’ve had fun with it, even if it’s five hours, 10 hours across the country, we try to have fun with it.”
  9. True...............wasn't that bad of a schedule, plus the Dayton game was lost to the UNLV shooting incident, then back filled with two NAIA level teams that were just to get the guys some run against someone in another uniform
