Now's an excellent time to hit DISH with another flurry of requests for/complaints about adding MTN. In the past we had no leverage other than our "numbers" and persistence. Even if the now public deal between MTN and DIRECTV doesn't get signed, we've got something solid to use in a renewed lobbying effort.

I just fired off two messages from the DISH web site to both CHARLIE CHAT and CUSTOMER (Contact us) SERVICE letting DISH know that if the MTN is not on DISH by September, I will be switching ... wrote the messages as if the contract were a done deal.

While I prefer Dish to DirecTV (esp. the PVR interface), they lost me as a customer by TOTALLY ignoring my requests for the Mtn previously. A good faith response that they were at least negotiating for the Mtn would have sufficed. Instead, they tried repeatedly to convince me that they already had the channel (Fox Rocky Mountain). I don't know if that deception was intentional or just mistaken, but they lost a lot of good will that I had for them. If they end up getting the channel and take the time to look up my emails and contacts over the months and ask me to become a customer again, I will listen. But I am not going to contact them again.

I saw enough verification of the rumors that I moved from Dish to DirecTV 3-4 weeks ago, and the conclusive bit was when the DirectTV rep knew EXACTLY what I was talking about and had concrete dates etc that jive with what's being announced now.

I made the move to 'reward' DTV for picking the Mtn up.

Having had both - here's the break down.

Cheaper for minimal channels - DTV.

Cheaper for lots of channels - Dish.

DVR responsiveness and utility - Dish by about 5 miles.

Do I care? No. ABC-HD and the Mtn with DirecTV. That won my business, but Dish is a far better high-end product IMO. DTV is more friendly to people who want to manage their channel package in a more detailed way, and that kind of fits with the Mtn.

Irony - I have to get the $12 sports pack to get the jazz games anyway.

I hope the Dish people get it. If they do, I may kick myself a little, but not a lot. I'd like to see DTV get swamped with installation requests (and in Utah, trust me, I'm sure that's happening) to reward them for picking up the Mtn and proving the value of the MWC market.

DISH sucks! The DISH that they serve is a bunch of sheat. DIRECT TV is way better than DISH. DIRECT TV has more channels, options, & is less expensive. Why would anyone go with DISH? DIRECT TV is the only way to go.

DirecTV is in no way cheaper than Dish and in fact runs on average $10 more per month. I've had both. Add to that that DirecTV's DVR service is far inferior to Dish's. Then there's the fact that DirecTV only brings local channels into big markets while Dish has my locals in Montana.

DirecTV also nickel and dimes you to death. For example having two TV's with dish network is the same price as having one TV. There is no extra $5 lease fee (enabling fee). There's sports pack is also $12/month while Dish only charges $5.

Just my personal feelings. However, DirecTV by far has more sports options but I'm not all that big into professional sports and prefer college sports.

Don't blame the indian in bangladesh for not understanding the difference between Fox Rocky Mountain and MTN. :D

Interesting comment from John Haddow about the prospects of Dish Network:

"There is what is called a "Most Favored Nation" clause. That means that DISH can get the MTN but not at the preferred price offered to DTV."

Good for DirectTV!!!!!

Hey NorCal Coug, I live in the SF Bay Area. I'm going to switch, mainly to get the hell away from Comcast. I got a flyer in the mail for Direct TV. Seems much cheaper than cable. Are you sold on Direct TV instead of Dish?

Not sure. I've had DishNetwork in the past and really liked it but that was pre-DVR, etc. days. They say that Dish has a MUCH better DVR service which is a must for the wife and I given our crazy schedules. Some of our friends have DTV and seem to really like it. I honestly couldn't give you a feel one way or the other. I'm with you though. It's time to get away from Comcast, what a rip-off (goes out all the time, pixilated picture, expensive, etc.) and being able to get the Mtn is the greatest excuse I can think of to do just that. :D

I've had both, and don't see a world of difference in the two. In my experience Dish was more willing to work with me to get the service I wanted. However, all in all I think DirecTV programming is better. One big plus of DirecTV, if you care about it, which I really don't is the NFL package. Don't get me wrong, I like the NFL, I just don't have time on Sundays even if I would watch it. Personally, I'd go with DirecTV. We now know they will have the mtn. We only think Dish will. Besides, I had a very bad experience with Dish during my move from PA to Boise. That said, if they had the channel and DirecTV didn't, I'd switch back.

That would be $5.99...

My mistake. I guess I should have said $6. It is still half the price. That said with the preferred pricing that DirecTV received it will be interesting to see what Dish does. I think they are going to find themselves in a bit of a pickle considering they had the opportunity to do this first and when people start cancelling in the region they will regret it. I don't want to seitch but will if I don't have a choice come next basketball season (sorry but there isn't a lot to root for with UNLV football).

I've had both at the same time.... Direct TV at my home from 1993 to currently (working on 15 years)... Dish Network at my store 1996 to 2006 (a little over 10 years)... The quality is close to the same and both have some things they do a little better than the other... But in the end I like the Direct TV's billing department a little better than Dish Networks, even though I pay a little more for Direct TV. But I don't have to much of a problem with Dish Network either and it would not be had for me to switch if they also carried the mtn...

Oh man, I'm still missing Monsters HD. HDNet is extra here on DTV too, which is goofy. I'm still trying to figure out where things are and how to 'run da clicker'.

Then again, I turned all the 3-months-free movie channels off and there seemed to be a lot of them.
