Does NM have a rival in the MWC?

Recommended Posts

I would consider them a rival for us in basketball only because the teams have played some absolutely epic games. I don't remember what year but I think it was the last year in the WAC and if I remember correctly a double OT game in the MWC Tourney. Maybe the best college basketball game I ever watched on TV before that Uconn/Cuse game in the Big East Tournament about 5 years ago.

There are no geographic rivalries in the MWC for UNM. In basketball the home games for SDSU and UNLV sell out immediately,so I would say they are our rivals in basketball. UTEP was a heated rival when we were in the WAC together. Texas Tech always gets fans here excited as well.

In the MWC? Not really, our two main rivals are UTEP and NMSU. They both brings thousands more fans to Abq for football than any other school in MWC. Even BYU, when they were in MWC.

We host UTEP, Arizona St, FSU, SDSU, Wyoming and BSU this year. UTEP will probably bring around 5-7K fans while the 4 conference home games will probably result in a total of around 500-1k fans visitors COMBINED. I'm not sure about ASU, but I'm thinking maybe 1k sundevil fans will visit Abq for the game.

Like I've said in the past. If UNM is never part of a P5 league then the 2nd best thing for UNM is to be in a conference/division with Wyoming, Colorado St, AFA, NMSU and UTEP. We' have always been fine together and will always be fine so long as the Mtn region schools continue to stick together.

And what's good for UNM....is good for the MWC.

Impossible to kick out a full member. All you can do is hope that our program goes under.

Until then, New Mexico could always try to join the Sunbelt or C-USA conferences if being in the same conference as NMSU or UTEP is so important. Then the MWC could pick up Idaho for a tighter geographic footprint and a reblossoming of the Boise St./Idaho lovefest. :P

We don't really have a major rival in general anymore. The main 2 have always been NMSU and UTEP. UTEP we only play every now and then in football and we never play in basketball.  NMSU gets a lot of hate from a few fans, but honestly  I know more Lobo fans who root for NMSU than ones who hate them.

Honestly the team Lobo fans probably +++++ on most is SDSU basketball.

I guess you don't know many Lobo fans.

I wouldn't root for NMSU if you put a gun to my head. I would become a BYU fan first.

If UNM football becomes a contender for the title they will become rivals for several schools.  Up to now almost every team in the MWC expected to win against the Lobos.  Bob Davie is slowly getting the program back in shape but it has been a painful trip.  Bottom line IMO is that UNM needs to be a contender in FB on a regular basis to develop some real rivalries.

It's odd but I don't feel that way towards UNR..... I actually want to see them do well except of course when they play UNLV

I know some feel that way, but most I've met don't. I saw quite a few Lobo fans in the crowd for the WAC tourney the past 2 season rooting for NMSU too

That's how I feel about NMSU and many Lobo fans feel the same.

As I said earlier the only team we play annually that our fans get really excited for it SDSU, and that's only for basketball.

I think the average Lobos fan is also an Aggies fan when they are not

playing each other.

I quietly rocked the Orleans this past March in support of NMSU and

their WAC Tourney Championship.

Tough part of town and a quiet arena.
