Texas Close to Deal with Shaka Smart

Recommended Posts

I thought Shaka Smart would never leave VCU.

I wonder why he's choosing to leave right now. Maybe he thinks he's hit his ceiling there.

There's no mystery here. Texas can flash the cash like few other schools can. Shaka's not above that nor is anyone else.

That would surprise me.

Me as well. I think VCU had a very distinct ceiling, especially after its first few trips to the NCAAs. The last three years they were one and done in March. It will be interesting to see if Smart can land a few elite athletes and get them to buy into his system.

If true, Texas will have Strong and Smart leading the major men's programs...

It would be a good hire. I think he's simply reached his ceiling at VCU and needs to be able to recruit better in order to have continued success in March. I think he's a good coach, one that is underrated by some members on this board, and would be able to build a contender at Texas: has more money than any school not in the Ivy league, has enough prestige that it can recruit itself, and doesn't come with the pressure of the other schools that went after him does/do.

Would be a home run hire. Smart coaches an aggressive, up tempo style of play that resonates with young players. And the state of Texas produces a lot of high D-1 caliber basketball players. The rosters of Kentucky and Duke have been littered with Texas kids.

The only downside is the level of politics within the Texas Athletic Department; it is brutal there.

I think smart will do well, I don't see them consistently being a title contender but every 2-3 years I can see

That's what I meant by consistently. And I don't care whether the guy has sometimes been one and done in the dance. He's a great game day coach and will amp up his recruiting at Texas compared to what he could do at VCU putting UT just behind Kansas in the B12. (Sorry, Hoiberg fans.)

Boom goes the dynamite.

If you had your choice of Marshall or Smart, which one would to choose?

I think I'd go with Marshall.

I'd go with Marshall. Smart's whole system is somewhat gimmicky and, in the past, if you can get VCU out of its system by slowing the game down and limiting turnovers they have been a very beatable team.
