UNLV target Zimmerman still weighing options on college decision

UNLV was the first school to offer a scholarship to Zimmerman, then a 14-year-old freshman-to-be, in 2011. Since then the Rebels have been a consistent presence in his recruitment and are considered by many as the favorite to land the nearly 7-footer out of a group of finalists that also includes UCLA, Kentucky, Arizona and Kansas.

Those fortunes might have changed had the university not decided last week to give coach Dave Rice at least another season.

Zimmerman said he wasn’t really following the situation — it appeared that Athletic Director Tina Kunzer-Murphy might fire Rice a year after giving him an extension — but that it could have changed his decision-making process.

“It’s a great thing that he was given another year,” Zimmerman said.

The entire Findlay Prep team came to McDonald’s to support Trier, and UNLV commit Justin Jackson said he was following Rice’s status much more closely. Jackson reached out to UNLV assistant coach Todd Simon, a former Findlay Prep coach, for updates.

“He guided me through it, he told me don’t worry, he calmed the storm for me,” said Jackson, a Canada native. “I have faith in Coach Rice and everyone else that was supporting him so I had no worries.”

Watch Calipari slip in the back door and sign him as UNLV is left with Dave Rice for another year.

The other programs listed are always threats to swipe players..........extremely strong list of programs.

And if UNLV landed Zimmerman, the pressure would really be on Rice to produce next season - so I would say his signing really adds to the Dave Rice future sweepstakes

With or without Zimm, you couldn't really add more pressure on Rice.

UNLV fans, give me some insight on how Rice is such a good recruiter. From an outsider, the dude looks like a complete goober. I would assume his act wouldn't play well with recruits but that's obviously not the case. What gives?

Zim in a UNLV uniform would still add to the pressure - Landing a top 5 big man is not a regular thing at UNLV, even Tark rarely got big time centers.

I agree with this. Zimm might raise expectations to win another game or two, but Rice is already going to be under quite a bit of pressure next year.

Hopefully we land Zimm. He is a very talented player, but he is also a really good kid.

It's really a mystery - he sells recruits on a run & gun offense, but we've seen UNLV is anything but run & gun.......not sure how Rice is getting in on and landing some of these recruits.

This. They don't grow on trees which is why the are drafted so high as projects. Risk - reward is hugh.

UNLV signs Zimmerman, has a good / great season, extends Rice, loses Zimmerman to the draft, and then what? To me this is more pressure for both?

That's the flip side..........if Zim does sign with UNLV and UNLV has a great year.........will it be a one year anomaly or will it be a sign of progress?!?!

I still don't think the issue will be settled if UNLV has a good season next year, then 3 players leave for the NBA.........because what's the follow up??

I agree with this. I have no idea how he does it. Maybe he wins parents over?

Rice is very good at typing up "blueprints" or reports for players that outline how he envisions them developing. Apparently this report is very detailed and really highlights their strengths and weaknesses. I think Rice does a lot of other cool stuff like this that really attracts recruits...he strikes me as someone that writes quite well and is able to express complex and analytical thoughts clearly.

Yep.........a top 5 big man is a rare thing at most programs, much less UNLV.........add that to an already "do or die" season and the pressure goes up to have a good to great season........one & done in the NCAA might have been good enough without Zim, with Zim, I think UNLV needs to win a game or two in the NCAAT.

And Zim could feel pressure because he and everyone would have to think his signing with UNLV is totally a "Save Dave Rice" effort.

If Zim signs with UNLV the pressure will no doubt go up over a season without Zim on the roster.

I think that's a big part of the process...........but any coach has to do that also.............but if Rice is selling "uptempo", fast paced offense and high scoring, the actual result doesn't meet the sales pitch.

And UNLV is far enough removed from the national title that a call from Stacey Augmon shouldn't carry much weight with recruits, because they weren't born when he was in a UNLV uniform and his NBA career was pretty quiet & average......he played a good number of years, be he was never an impact player or household name in the NBA.

That's all good and perhaps it worked for recruits early in his UNLV career...........but as time has moved on and there's more "product & results" to witness, the luster could fade on that recruiting tactic.

Though UNLV & Rice got very lucky Cleveland took a flyer on drafting Bennett #1 overall  - who saw that coming and UNLV can point to that as a "result", even though Bennett has been below or average as an NBA player.

I don't think recruits think about how Bennett has done in the NBA from a statistics standpoint...they just care that he was the top pick in the draft.

Could be - that high draft pick comes with some serious $$$$

This is hidden subliminally in every email and text message sent to a recruit.
