Rich Rodriguez...

Recommended Posts

This one kind of surprised me, since Rich Rodriguez in a West Virginia Alumni (I think his wife is too). I thought they would go after Cincinnati's Head Coach (Brian Kelly), he turned around Central Michigan (MAC Champion last year) program in 3 years. So he knows how to recruit in Michigan and knows the area.

So now it looks like these schools are still looking for a coach;

SMU

UCLA

West Virginia

It's Michigan. It's one of those jobs that can take a coach from any school practically.

I love Brian Kelly. He'd be a great hire, but Rich Rodriguez is a little better.

It just proves that the Big East is just a stepping stone to the big time.

Well, part of that I agree with. There was an article (maybe Dennis Dodd or Ivan Maisel), that listed off what he felt were the jobs that were the "holy grail" jobs

Michigan

Ohio St.

Penn St.

USC

Oklahoma

Texas

Florida

Alabama

Georgia

Tennessee

These are jobs you rarely leave from to go to another unless you are being fired or are retiring. You generally aren't moving down from one of these teams. Ask yourself, in terms of prestige, history, facilities, donors, etc.: Does WVU have Michigan beat in any of these? Not likely and most WVU fans know it. It stings that he turned down one of these jobs to go to another.

If I look at RichRod, Alabama was not an ideal situation. They are competing with LSU and Auburn on a yearly basis just to get the right to play a Florida or Tennessee before having a chance at the BCS. Michigan is a lot like WVU in that the Big Eleven has no conference championship. Win the Big Ten, at worst you go to the Rose Bowl. Win the Big East, and unfortunately you aren't anchored to a bowl game. As long as you are an anchor for a BCS bowl game, the BCS can't dump you as an AQ conference.

It's gonna be a bit bumpier for Rodriguez at Michigan than many think. Assuming he's going to implement his spread offense in the Big House, it'll take him at least 3 years to recruit the kind of athletes he needs to execute his system. Typically the Big 11 is all about big bodies and grinding your opponent into the ground. Speed at the skill positions is nice, but it's not typical up there and generally not necessary. Size is usually the most coveted attribute, and speed and agility at the QB position is absolutely unheard of!!!

I will be very interested to see how he handles this transition. There are no Steve Slatons and Pat Whites in Ann Arbor to make that system work the way it has in Morgantown. He's going to have to drastically change the way he plays the game--at least temporarily--and most coaches lack the flexibility to change their ways. They make the mistake of force feeding their system into a group of players that aren't capable of handling and executing what's being asked of them, rather than adjusting the system to the personnel available and gradually bringing in more suitable players and playing the system you truly want to run.

I hope for Rrodriguez' sake that the fans in Michigan are patient, because it's gonna be a very bumpy ride for a few years.

I think that is a real bummer. There are a bunch of bad bowl matchups this season (BYU/UCLA rematch the worst), but I thought that Oklahoma-West Virginia was the best. With the coach moving on and the loss to Pitt, the Mounties lose a bunch of luster, and the bowl season (or should I say "post season exhibition games) become much more dull.

Go Cougs!!!!!!!

P. S. On the flip side, the worst day with college football is better than the best day without it.

Or LSU......

I don't think Nebraska has the same spit and polish that it once did. There are many far more attractive jobs out there besides Nebraska.

Probably true, but those memories and pockets run deep there....only a matter of time. Notre Dame as well, overall history, not just trends.

I like RR at Michigan, I think it will mix up the Big 10/1. As long as they haven't totally figured it out by next season when the Utes show up :D

Nothing to really say here.....except GO MWC!!

Just like the rest of the Big11, they don't like the spread offenses with speed. Michigan, Ohio St., and Wisconsin always struggle with those types of teams. That's how we almost beat them a few years ago at the Big House (actually, we should've beaten all three, but alas......).

Hey, it wasn't my list. I'm sure if you pressed the writer, Ivan Maisel, Notre Dame and a couple others would have made the list.
