According to a report from AL.com, the Crimson Tide Foundation paid off Saban's $3.1 million home in January 2013 even though the organization was under no obligation to do so.

The Sabans, who bought the 8,759-square-foot home in 2007, continue living there with the foundation picking up the tab for property taxes each year.

I've never been for paying players. But seeing this crap is pushing me towards that direction.

if the rumors are true that Texas offered Saban $10 million, maybe this is one reason he didn't go?  I agree that's bush league.

I wonder if that's the case also.

Ha! Come on Mug, these guys are just helping the needy. The Sabans already are sacrificing by squeezing into less than 9,000 sq. ft. for the good of The Tide. He probably cant even afford to feed his family on his meager $EC wages.

Clearly a good use of foundation dollars.

Clearly....

They are roughing it. Less than 9,000 sq ft. That is a rough life. Not sure I could survive with a house that is nearly 5x the size of my current home. But you would have to give me free housing too if you wanted me to live in Alabama.

to be fair, it is Alabama? Would you rather be indoors or outside in Alabama? Maybe 9,000 isn't enough.

That is true. I'd rather be indoors all the time if I lived in Alabama

I wouldn't mind a trip out there, just to experience the culture shock and find out how will react when I tell them my school doesn't play football.

The real question is what's bigger. CSU's 70x40 IPF or Saban's house.

I think Saban's house could fit perfectly on the field in CSU's IPF.

I would be comfortable in saying that Saban has brought in exponentially more in Alumni donations and TV coverage/revenue than he has cost the U of Alabama foundation. If he keeps them winning and filling the stadium, he deserves it. He'll get thrown out when he starts losing and deservedly so. It's the fans who buy the gear and tickets that get the blame.

On the other hand, I'm all for paying the football and basketball players a $2000 per semester stipend. It's nearly impossible to have a part time job with all the practice time, travel and mandatory study time.

This story is obviously fake. There can't be any 3.1 million dollar houses in Alabama.

University systems often buy homes in which their presidents will reside during their tenures (but they leave when they're finished)....so I guess it's not a huge surprise that the booster's foundation at football crazy Bama basically did the same thing for a coach they didn't want to lose to Texas...I read some another articles on it and it states that they actually bought the home from Saban and he'll be allowed to live there as long as he wants...even after he retires (presumably from Bama)....not a bad perk.

Saban's a turd.  He's made how many tens of millions of dollars and he has a mortgage on a $3.1 million house?  He should have a killer low interest rate, the tax deduction can't be that good that paying a mortgage is that great of a deal.

If only there was an accountant type person who could give some ideas on that?

Out of my mind for the Lobos!!

In the swamps, sure.  But elsewhere I'm sure you can find a mansion or two that used to sit on a plantation and is worth that much.

There's wealth stashed somewhere in the state.
