Here is an update from the Review Urinal.

Before the meeting, UNLV acting President Don Snyder, who serves as stadium board chairman, said the cost estimates appeared reasonable.

“It frames the conversation pretty well,” Snyder told the Review-Journal.

This one isn't pie-in-the-sky. The question isn't so much whether it will happen, but how much it will cost. Hopefully they put on the dome and spend the extra bucks. It will be worth it in the long run.

It would be a waste of money to build an open air stadium in Vegas. If you want to make it into the revenue generating venue that it has the potential to be, it has to be covered and air conditioned. No one is going to attend anything there in the summer unless it is covered.

Those numbers are way off because there is another 200 million plus in parking garages and other things needed that aren't even included.

Depends on the project.  CSU needs parking garages for their stadium, but they were already in the master plan for the campus anyway so it's a separate budget.  I'm just saying that there are a lot of moving parts in these things.

I don't think you can build a $500 - $700 Million college stadium anywhere and have any reasonable expectation of it showing some positive cash flow someday...except maybe Vegas.  This is intriguing.

From the article, it looks like they hope to book twice the number of events that they are getting at Sam Boyd, but I guess that stadium will sit empty or be torn down.  They also mention MLS, but I doubt an open aired stadium would get one of those teams since they continue to not follow the world model and play in the Summer.  Plus, I have real doubts Las Vegas is anywhere near the top of the MLS expansion list no matter what.
