Why Tony Sanchez will transform UNLV

Why Tony Sanchez will transform UNLV football into a winning program

Sanchez would not have left the best high school coaching job in the nation, one with air-tight job security, for one of the worst college jobs if changes weren’t on the horizon. He would not have put his coaching reputation at risk by taking over the sinking tugboat that is UNLV football unless the wheels of change were in motion.

He has a vision, something he’ll begin sharing today during his introductory news conference, and won’t settle for anything less than the best. He won’t settle for a winning record; he wants to win championships. He won’t be the next coach to win two games for a few seasons and wave the white flag in defeat.

Article on the contract & incentives:

Sanchez to get four-year, $500,000 annual salary from UNLV

The incentives in Sanchez’s contract, which he signed Tuesday, are many:

— $30,000 for 11 victories in a season, $25,000 for 10, $20,000 for nine, $15,000 for eight and $10,000 for seven.

— $100,000 for appearing in a New Year’s Six bowl, $25,000 for making the Las Vegas Bowl, $20,000 for playing in the Poinsettia Bowl and $10,000 for any other bowl.

— $25,000 for winning the Mountain West championship, $10,000 for being ranked in the final coaches’ poll and $10,000 for being named conference Coach of the Year.

— $25,000 for appearing in a Saturday game on ESPN or ESPN2 and $15,000 for playing on a weekday game on one of those networks.

— $25,000 for achieving a one-year Academic Progress Rate of 960, $15,000 for a 955 multiyear APR and $5,000 for each academic All-American. (A team must achieve a minimum four-year APR average of 930 to be eligible for the postseason, which was UNLV’s score before last season.)

— $10,000 for every 5,000 in additional season-ticket sales over the previous year.

The maximum total for the TV, ticket sales and academic bonuses is $50,000. The other incentives are not included in that cap.

As for the buyout information, Sanchez would receive the remainder of his $250,000 base salary through the end of his term if UNLV fires him. He also could take a $500,000 lump-sum payment if the termination occurs by June 30, 2017, or $250,000 if it’s after that date

Guest #1Stunner

It will be interesting to watch his transition from being a High School coach at Bishop Gorman (i.e., getting the best talent in the nation, and beating up on local High Schools), to being a first-time college coach at a program that is at a significant recruiting disadvantage compared to its peers.

Hopefully UNLV hires some assistants that will instruct Mr. Sanchez on how to be a college level coach.

I hope he is successful. But I think there needs to be significant structural changes at UNLV for him to succeed.

It will be interesting to see. I think the biggest thing that needs to change around UNLV football is institutional commitment. If Sanchez can bring in money and finally convince UNLV and the community to invest the funds needed for a quality program, the hire will be a success. Hopefully the wheels of change are truly in motion, but I'll believe it when I see it.

I wish him all the luck in the world...I do...but it will be interesting.  Personally, I don't see his success at Gorman as some game changing selling point like others for the reasons you state. I'm also not sold on a bunch of quality assistants raising their hands to come work for a guy that will need more on the job training than some other possible hires.  Maybe we'll see some older 'name' guys come in and help mentor him...we'll see.

I guess in the end, the real question for me is this:  Does this guy even get an interview if the prospect of the Fertitta money wasn't out there?  If the answer is no...then I'm not sure how this can viewed (as of today, that is) as a 'good' hire from purely a coaching standpoint. That doesn't mean he can't prove his worth or that UNLV couldn't use the cash...I get that, but as motivating as that 'ra,ra' piece is...i'm not sure if it really asks the right questions.

From what I understand this wasn't some spur of the moment decision, but this was a plan. That alone is encouraging, because UNLV football has never had a true plan on how to turn the program around. They have just hired some guy from out of nowhere, and hoped he could turn it around, and just hoped if he could start winning around people would want to start being football boosters and others would start flooding into Sam Boyd to see them play. But it didn't happen, we went to a bowl, took the cannon, and commitment was still awful because everyone thought the sliver of success last season was just an abnormality and nothing really changed..and they were right.

This hire symbolizes true change. Highschool coach or not, I like that Sanchez/Fertittas have a plan to get proper facilities in place, and improve the ones they already have to atleast be able to recruit on or slightly above the level of our peers in the MWC. I'm not saying we're going to land Top 5 recruiting classes in the country in football like we do in basketball, but we should consistently land Top-3 classes in the MWC.

Once we have fixed recruiting and facilities, the only real question that remains is whether Sanchez can coach at this level. But if he can get the other two things I mentioned established, the coaching concerns are a risk I'm more than willing to take.

Not sure about the security of HS coaching argument when he can sign for $2M at UNLV.    Would take many years coaching HS to reach that number.

Recruiting won't be easy and that's where it starts.   Rebel fans need much patience and the 4 year contract is probably the short term IMO.

He already settled for UNLV, so that pretty much blows a hole in this commentary.

Seriously, I can't believe how many people are spinning this as a good thing.

"Big Incentives?" He is the lowest paid MWC HC. He gets $30K for 11 victories?

This guy agreed to it. That alone tells me he is a HORRIBLE Businessman in way over his head. My guess is he is the same in D-1 Fb as a coach.

Ray Brewer is a massive UNLV homer, fan and optimist so take that with a grain of salt when reading the article/piece.

He gets 11 victories, U$C will hire him away. He's not worried about incentives.

What style offense/defense does he run?
I know nothing about the guy...

I do think that the article is pretty optimistic.  Doesn't touch on X's and O's or recruiting at all, just basically says that he will be successful because he took the job.

I think most coaches believe they will be successful when they take a job.

Well I can say this- his hiring immediately affords UNLV football immediate respect locally. Kids know who Sanchez is and respect/fear Gornan's program. We have talent here, and it'll be nice that they don't view UNLV football as a joke anymore.

Well.....that remains to be seen. If he fails the UNLV football will still be a joke.

No matter what the outcome, there is a definite recruiting advantage locally we have now.

I'll agree with that. But the top talent will still go to the P5 conferences, but you may be able to keep some of the mid level talent that usually goes elsewhere.
