Boise Pushed Championship Game Site Criteria On MWC

Recommended Posts

It turns out that Boise is the main reason the MWC relies on CFP rankings as primary criteria to determine the Championship Game home field.

It is not clear who wanted computer polls added to the rules in case the higher ranked school lost in the last weekend of conference play. That may have been Boise or someone else.

As reported in the Idaho Statesman today, the host site criteria were part of the term sheet agreement about Boise's return to the MWC.

Boise State’s contract with the Mountain West — negotiated at the end of 2012 when the Broncos decided to stay rather than depart for the Big East — keeps delivering for the Broncos.

The latest perk: home-field advantage for the Mountain West championship game Saturday against Fresno State.

Boise State insisted on that system because it protects a team that is on the cusp of a major bowl bid from having to play the championship game on the road. And when Boise State was making this deal, the Broncos were perennial contenders for such a berth.

If not for that provision, the system likely would be different. Only two other conferences play their championship games at home sites (American and Conference USA), and both rely on conference records to determine the site. That would have given Fresno State the edge — both teams are 7-1 in the Mountain West and the Bulldogs won the head-to-head game last week.

The term sheet agreement was written in the old BCS days and used to set up the original conference championship game rules. The rules were modified for CFP but retained the same basic idea that Boise wanted in 2012 (primarily use playoff rankings).

The relevant term sheet statement:

5. Other Provisions
(c) Should MWC have 12 or more members, then it is the present intent that the conference will be divided into two divisions. A conference championship game will be played at the home of the team with the highest BCS ranking as of a date specified by MWC.

I guess the president of FSU, and the rest should have gone against the idea. It was not so bad when USU played at Fresno a few years back. I do not think it is that big of a deal. Just like playing the basketball championship on UNLV's home floor is.
