What is it with these "family values" types? Another Trumpster goes down.

I own a vehicle likely worth more than everything you own combined and just flew first class (including a ticket for a 2 1/2 year old), round trip to Las Vegas and I'm not 35 yet. When you accomplish something outside of finishing a book, let me know. When's the last time you saw a 2 year old fly first class in their own seat? Don't tell me about elite.

Counterpoint:

Alcohol use becomes abuse often, sure, but something like 90% of users drink a beer with their dinner and that's it. No more story.

The issue for me is when criminalizing something creates more victims than having it be legal, regulated, and, frankly, bound by culture and custom instead of law. I don't think it is a stretch to say that our laws for prostitution and drug use are there. I do not gamble, I do not see the point of it, and in fact the closest I have ever come is getting 3rd place in the NCAA tournament bracket on this website, winning me... I think a 50 buck target gift card (niiiiice, thanks Mug). So... I don't see any point to gambling, I would like a law that makes it illegal to accept borrowed money, as the establishment, for gambling. Have them have the onus of proof.

Prostitution and gambling in Colombia/Costa Rica are legal.  There are little casinos in the malls and slot machines in a lot of bars.  Because it isn't the "forbidden fruit" people almost yawn when they pass by.  I imagine the only reason Vegas exists with all of the extreme gambling and craziness is because it criminalized in so much of the USA.  Prostitution being legal in one little county in Nevada makes it a haven for weirdos too.  Colorado and states legalizing weed are having some of the same issues with these people moving in.  If this stuff was legal it would probably be much less of a societal problem and these places wouldn't become such a concentrated haven/magnet for degenerates as much.  No guns, though, so that is probably why gun folks like to go the USA too!

I know this isn't exactly the point you were making but FYI prostitution is legal in most counties in NV. And yes, those counties can be weird.  Kind of a creepy/almost charming weird.

To your main point, I will attest I find nothing exciting about gambling or buying alcohol whenever and wherever since I grew up in Vegas.  You are right in that there's just no thrill. I don't feel like I'm doing anything naughty. But thank god most people do or we'd still be one of those weird little counties.

No kidding. That is why I have no internet in legislating morality. It is obvious that leaders set a different standard between what they vote for and what they do. There may be a few sincere guys but they seem buried by the opportunists.

Besides... Morality is often its own reward. Keeping inmoral stuff legal just puts it in the clear instead of hiding.

The Nixon purge is what brought the moral majority out of the wilderness.  That’s why I think you should be careful what you wish for regarding the current Clinton purge.

Are you saying it will make the socialists the majority?

@happycamper is right about legislating of morality. The Netherlands has some of the lowest drug addiction and overdose rates in Europe:

Nah. Gambling is legal all along the Mississippi, it is legal in Nevada, it is legal in Delaware and New Jersey. You still get addicts who ruin their lives.

Prostitution being legal is fraught with issues as well. There's a gigantic overlap between "prostitute" and "sex slave", even in apparent freelancers. A lot of the girls are not exactly there of their own free will, and the lifespan of a prostitute - even in nations where prostitution is legal - is something like 30 years less than the public at large.

The only reason why I think they should be legal is because it is extremely obvious that more harm comes to society and to the users when they are illegal than when they are legal.

Always the people that are holier than thou with the most to hide. Shocked that another "family values" someone is playing hide the sausage with someone they supposedly deplore.

While there are a lot of things with the GOP that I like...their support of the "family values" types and religious nuts has always rubbed me the wrong way, and is a reason I could never vote for them.

Where have you gone Richard Nixon? A lonely nation sets its eyes on you.

Is it any shock that so many of these prominent Christian conservatives tend to be closeted gays?  Rather than accept who they are, they tend to throw themselves into the most conservative institutions in America (evangelical churches, the Marines, far right politics, QB for the Florida Gators) thinking that will somehow cleanse the impurity. Instead it just makes them very +++++ed up gay guys.  I've always felt that if I were gay, I'd be open about it because it's a much healthier way to go through life............and as an added bonus it would tend to piss off all the right people.

Not at all. I think a lot of the family values types were raised in conservative, uber-Christian loving households, and as a result, have this repressed sexuality that has been locked down more than they were in the closet when they were younger. They put on this whole "I hate everything different 'cause it's immoral and wrong" act while at the same time are playing footsie with sum yung gai in a bathroom stall somewhere in rural Oklahoma. Once caught, they'll talk about how they need to "pray for forgiveness to my lurd and saviur" and then will disappear from public life.

Another thing I always laugh at is the fact that they claim to be "limited government conservatives", but are always the first to jump on the "use government as a tool to repress my enemies " train, thereby making themselves look entirely more foolish than they already do.
