Shit the burner phone I got at Wal-Mart does everything I need it to.

I don't understand paying 500+ dollars for a telephone.

Thats why my work buys mine for me! :)

When I've had to buy my own, usually get a mid level phone.  I had 3 androids and each one after about 9 months started to not work so good, battery issues, slowness, camera problems...  I have a iphone 6 now and have had good luck with it for 2 years.  A few issues but nothing major.  Yes they are overpriced though and for the iphone 5&6 - 16GB can fill up fast.

I'll wait until the X price comes down before I "upgrade". The 6 I have right now works great. I'm a fan of Apple products too, if only for their simplicity. My MacBook is awesome, too, but I just don't feel like paying a ton of money when I can wait and see the price go down.

Shit, I was in a fast food place during HS lunch the other day. It was filled with teenagers, but eerily silent. I looked around, thinking I'd must have been abducted by aliens, or the rapture really happened and I, as an agnostic heathen, was left with the Earth to myself....but nope, each of the kids was on their phone, texting, or doing some SnapFace or InstaChat -type shit. While it's nice not to hear the jibber-jabber of incandescent adolescents, it's still somewhat chilling and almost frightening to see people become virtual slaves of their technological devices.

No one talks to each other anymore. There's literally no conversation that takes place, and it's not just with teenagers, but other people too. No one talks, they just check their phones and text, or do whatever else it is on the Internet, like look at cat memes or something. To me, this is one of the big drivers of problems we have in the country today.

I like reading shit on the Internet, but if I'm with people, I'm going to give them my full attention if I invite them to hang out. If I'm by myself, then I'll be on my phone and not a rude asshole.

Normally, I think you're a bit of an asshat, but I think you're right on the money with this line or thinking. Kudos.

The funny thing is remember how irritating it was in the late nineties and early OO's when everyone was always talking on their phone?  At restraunts (instead of talking to their kids), on the subway, at football games, everywhere.  People were always gabbing away on their Nokia or Motorola.  You don't see that anymore.

I admit, I do get pissed off at my kids and other folks, usually under 30, because they never answer the damn phone.

Hey mother phuckers, it's a PHONE, ya know, actually talking to other people; not just a damn texting device!

edit: and oh yeah, I forgot, GET OFF MY LAWN!!!!!!

I miss the days of sitting in the old Elephant and Castle in San Francisco's Financial District, listening to a bunch of day-traders lose their shit on some unwitting bastard on the other line after a bad day on the markets. Annoying? Somewhat. Entertaining? Absolutely. I miss those days.

No one even goes to the bar to watch a game anymore. If you go somewhere to watch a game, chances are that people are going to be sitting somewhere, taking up space, but are just texting or doing something inane on the phone.  Like a bunch of zombies hooked on their zombie cocaine of a cellular telephone.

Yeah I admit I can be a bit of an asshat, but this is a forum overpopulated with vocal right wing asshats  so I follow the tenant of when in Rome...

The adage "treat others as you wish to be treated" doesn't work on the internet.  Too many people using forums to vent their frustrations, or let their inner demons out.  Like Tools - he may actually be a decent guy in real life.  But he definitely has an inferiority complex that he self treats here by attacking others.   I single him out because it can sometimes be fun to poke the bear. And that's my little foible I guess.  You pretty much have to have one if you engage in a politically charged forum like this one.

I'll say this though - here I go by treat others as they treat you.  If you engage politely, I'm polite in turn. If you engage as an asshat, well I can dish that out too.

I didn't elaborate more than my two word reply...and I agree with your post...I was merely busting your balls by calling you an asshat...

I'm a fan of anyone advocating their opinion, regardless of if it jives with mine or not. I think we should encourage more dialog from both sides to come to a common solution rather than allowing ourselves to be divided and conquered by the puppet masters that pull the strings in Washington.

The Internet has killed civility by allowing people to be placed into their own little "boxes" and fire away from there. I'm a fan of civil dialog, and simply debating the issues. I think this forum (more than many I've been to) does a good job of trying to keep it civil. We all bust each other's balls on occasion and fire back and forth, but at the same time, it's not really that destructive. Open forums should be a place for ideas and should be a place to let things get a little heated. I'm not a fan of using moderators in forums, unless someone is posting threats to kill someone or something, but if it's name calling or something...it's all fair game.

I respect your opinions, just like I respect others'. If you aren't in my face about them and don't try to force them down your throat, I probably won't be an asshole. I might try to point out where I think you've erred, but more or less, I think the dialog that goes on in a forum like this that represents such a diverse section of the world (American West, basically) is a good thing and sometimes reminds me that there is still a little sliver of sanity left in the world.

If I'm going to sit down and seriously listen to music, I'll run it through one of my other wired systems. I have a couple setups to do that and have embraced a vintage setup that I've been enjoying lately, but a lot of times, it's just easier to use Google Home for that. One thing I do like about Google Home is that you can play your music over all of them at the same time, so having multiple pods around the house is a good setup. I presume that Apple's Home pod will do the same.

I agree with you about the convenience. I've purchased about 800 dollars worth of higher end bluetooth speakers from HK and Marshall and I keep going back to some old Polk bookshelf speakers hooked up to a Griffin twenty bluetooth amp. I keep buying high dollar wireless headphones too hoping they sound as good as the wired version which of course they don't. I do have to say those new Apple earpods sound much better than those Beats versions which don't sound any better than any other $20 set. I guess I keep hoping that convenient technology finally catches up with quality.

Did you hear about how Apple was caught "coaxing" customers to spend more on newer devices via software updates that deliberately slow down older units?

And I've taken them apart and replaced components.  A lot of cheap crap.  And I believe they keep it glass because of the lucrative after-market component parts industry for broken screens.  Lets market fragile, easily breakable electronics to specifically the under 25 crowd.  It's like printing your own money!  :D

The glass back is to facilitate wireless charging --- the only options there are glass or plastic. Samsung went that route a while ago for wireless charging as well. Teardowns of the 8+ 64GB show that the cost of components is about $300, compared to its $800 retail value. Yeah, that's a helluva markup, but it's almost identical to the Galaxy S8 markup, and the 8+ is the bigger phone. The Samsung markup on the Note 8 is actually even more.

I think the question with apple moving forward isn’t one not so great product launch, it’s if the mobile web gets good/fast  enough to render most apps obsolete.

and apple is a phone company now, all their revenue comes from that.  Mac market share is still small, hasn’t grown a bit, despite their mobile dominance.

Apple has always been overrated.  IPhone's are overpriced crap.  Paying for their brand name.  $700 for <75 worth of electronics.  More for a phone than a laptop.

Thanks Apple on behalf of parents everywhere, for creating a device that exploits narcissistic tendencies of our tweens/teens and turns them into lab rats always looking for the next like or comment to the stupid shit they post.

I've literally seen teenagers texting others in the same room.

This is like the gun control argument. And as far as I know, Apple doesn't have likes, Facebook (MySpace really) invented that and the first text was sent in 1992. I think you're blaming the wrong company.

I see it too much for my liking....and usually, it's some nincompoop who's talking on speaker phone so both parties can annoy you. The drives me crazy.

I haven't heard the new Apple wireless earphones, but I do like Powerbeats 3 because the battery life is great and they have a hook to go around my ears....otherwise when I workout or ride, the damn earphones keep popping out.

On the home stereo front, I just rebuilt an old Marantz receiver from the 1970's and added led bulbs and that bad boy has an amazing, warm sound. My son saw the old school setup and laughed at first....then I couldn't keep his hands off my vinyl. I've planted the seed. B)

Respectfully, I disagree.  The iPhone's design was meant to utilize application programs, the majority of which would be communication based or information based.  It literally was designed to demand and command your attention. They knew younger people would be their target audience. Perhaps the exploitation of narcissistic tendencies of tweens to early twenties was a result they didn't entirely anticipate, but I really believe they had it in mind.  And while I know your point is more directed to the application developers, they'd be useless without the device being the conduit.  Intertwined instead of merely associated in my opinion.

Cell phone hardware doesn't really have anywhere else to go. That's why all you see anymore are improvements/enhancements on the margins; improved cameras, better/larger displays etc. It's all become very boring. I prefer Android in that there are multiple HW vendors, each trying to add a feature here or there to distinguish themselves from the competition.

Manufacturers are in a quandary. The next step is really to imbed the interface/display in something other than a large piece of glass but to date success has been elusive. Google Glass was too creepy and I think that perception will endure for quite a while. Not sure where else there is to go other than some other sort of "wearable" device but anything that's not overtly an appliance will likely be considered too intrusive by the general public, like Google Glass.

All of my computers are Macs (been exclusively on OSX since 2001), my work and personal handsets are iPhones, my tablet is an iPad, and I have an Apple TV4. I'm not "anti-Apple."

Being a fan or not a fan of apple is a lot like being a Repub or a Democrat. You defend your side blindly and loyally regardless of facts or events. Maybe we'd call it consumer tribalism? I think you're just being real.

Those are the ones I use too, because of the hooks when i work out. They were free with a Mac purchase for my kid. They don’t sound any better than the $20 dollar knockoff on Amazon that I bought but they sync much better. I think that’s where the technology has improved and where Apple is superior to other companies. Integration of their ecosystem. The EarPods automatically sync connect play and charge without having to go through a bunch of menus.

Snapchat is the most irritating app of all. All the kids want to keep their streaks alive.

If you like it, buy it...if you don’t, don’t buy it...I don’t see the point in arguing about it as Apple is making lots of money so they’ll just move on with or without you.

Things like this tend to be cyclical... yes, Apple has been a follower for a while, but that's how they've trended. They'll follow, and then they'll release something groundbreaking, and then they'll follow again for a while. Their following stage has lasted longer than normal this time around, but I have no doubts that they'll be ahead of the game again with something in the near future.

As far as the phones go... I think the only reason they released an 8/8+ along with the X was due to OLED supply concerns. I think that if they really had their way, they would have only released an X along with a replacement for the SE. They also knew that the price point was going to scare some people away, as will FaceID. I think the next release cycle we'll see something like an XS, XS+, and X SE or something be released, all with FaceID, and the SE phone lacking a few features, and probably still on a standard LCD screen.

I have no pressing need to replace my 6S+ for the moment, and the X doesn't make me want to run out and buy it, but I've always been wary about adopting  the first of a new generation of devices. I waited for the iPhone 3G, and the 4S... the one time I jumped on a new one was the 6+, and that burned me with the bending frame issues. I'll wait for after it actually comes out and people review it, and then consider whether or not I want to get one.

Yeah, so about that.

I'm an Apple whore and pre-ordered it earlier tonight. I should be getting it from Best Buy on the 10th. I choose to finance my phones, mostly because it's 0% interest so I don't have to drop $1000 (or whatever) on a phone up front. Part of the reason why I decided to do it is because it'll actually save me $5/mo over the iPhone 6S+ that I currently have. My wife chose to upgrade to an 8+ from her 6S normal... it'll be getting here on Monday. That upgrade will actually save us $10/mo from her old one. So hey, new phones, and $15/mo less on my phone bill. I actually decided to just pay mine off for the $130 that was left on it because I can sell it to Gazelle unlocked for $215.

So, I'll be a guinea pig for Apple on FaceID and all of the new technology. Plus, I can always return it within 14 days if I don't like it, and either go back to my 6S+ or get an 8+.

Ugh.  Have you seen how to put the 10 into recovery mode?  Not sure if it has been released to the public yet and all the geek blogs online have it wrong.

It works exactly the same as it did before, only you use the side buttons. They made the same change to the iPhone 8/8+ because the home buttons on them are just capacitive and don't actually do anything if the phone is off.
