He had a 156-25-5 record as a coach. In 34 years as a coach and athletic director the football team never had a losing season. The football team won a national championship while he was a coach and another while he was athletic director. The field is named after him and a statue was erected in front of the stadium in his honor last year.

Before he was coach BJC was 26-33.

In the 70 years since 1947 when he became head coach, Boise has had only 5 seasons with a losing record.

Lyle Smith established the culture here. Period.

All losing seasons were after that blue field were installed.

RIP coach.

I just saw this!  Has this topic seriously not been discussed yet?!?

Either way, he definatley lived a FULL life, and I'm not sure anyone would disagree that the guy was a genuine badass...

101 years old - that's shit Chuck Norris couldn't even fathom...

That was a great way to start a program.  Unless he was an eternal optimist, it probably blew his mind how far BSU football has came in his lifetime.

The first Fiesta, they did a very good job of showing him often. The biggest optimist would've been amazed.
