Trump and Cognitive Decline

Recommended Posts

I never paid much attention to Trump prior to 2016. He always struck me as a gauche buffoon. But apparently in the past he was considerably more articulate than at present. This could be an indicator of cognitive decline or even the onset of Alzheimer's.

I'm dealing with the issue right now with my 86 year-old Father. The words are just falling away. It really struck home about a year ago at a family gathering when he mentioned how much he liked "the green stuff." I didn't know what he was talking about until I realized he'd forgotten the word for guacamole.

I would like to know what he puts in his Cheerios.  The guy is 70 years old and his activity level is pretty extreme for someone of his age.  My mom is 72 and just getting outside the house and maybe making a trip to the store is a major event.

We had to force my mother to give up her license a year ago due to Alzheimer's. It robbed her of her freedom and independence and she's been pretty miserable ever since. If we had to do it all over again, we would have delayed for a month or two. It was the right decision however at the time.

The disease is a brutal one. It takes the people you love away in stages. The woman I most admired for her intellect and organizational skill can no longer do simple math problems, understand her electric bill or remember her children's birthday's.  She hallucinates that there are people in her house, has bouts of paranoia about people stealing from her and thinks odd things like someone added a bathroom to her house overnight.  She can no longer dress herself properly. We've moved her into my sister's home and have hired round the clock nursing, which is still way cheaper than a memory care facility. Most of decline happened rapidly, over about 18 months although my sister says she has seen small indicators for about 3-4 years.

There is no real treatment, which is the most frustrating part. They essentially treat with anti-psychotics and mood stabilizers and a very few drugs that claim to "slow" onset, The anti-psychotics, according to her doctor, are designed to lower the level of dopamine in patients that have high levels and apply them to Alzheimer's patients, who have similar symptoms as those with high dopamine but caused by the destruction of brain tissue, not chemical levels. The thinking being that lowering standard dopamine levels will alleviate the hallucinations.  We have yet to see the benefit. They keep adjusting so we are essentially turning our mother into a chemistry experiment. So much fun.

I don't think this should be a matter of political speculation. It is a clinical diagnosis. If he has it, it will be readily apparent soon enough. From my experience, I don't think he does.

myMom.

I remember visiting  her in 2012 and asked her why she wasn't on her computer anymore.

I turned it on and she tried to manipulate icons on the screen using  her finger, not with  the mouse

OMG. She forgot how it worked. She had emailed me only 8 months earlier about something important.

it happens fast.

as for Trump? Who knows?

I don't mean to be disrespectful, but 70 is just a few years into retirement for most people. Most people I know at that age (and far beyond) are in good physical shape.

Yeah there is a difference between being in good shape for a 70 year old and jet-setting all over the world, working 12+ hour days 7 days per week, tweeting nonstop, and still managing to bang home 10-15 rounds of golf every month. I am 46 years old and I don't have that much energy.

My sympathies re your Mom. I'm dealing with it developing in my Dad along with my two daughters. There's an underlying sadness in the fact that we could go through it again with me in 25 years when I'm his age.

The difference in Trump's speech patterns now vs 20 years ago is pretty remarkable. If not the result of cognitive decline, it would seem intentional. Maybe that's literally speaking to the base.

It can be slow or fast.

Just like everything else in the world it is way more complicated than a socialist can comprehend.

I have seen people go from no symptoms to dead in less than 6 months and I have seen them do pretty well for 10-15 years.

I would suspect some of it is the effect of giving stupid speeches to stupid people over a long period day after day.

There in nothing more mind numbing than dealing with voters.   I couldn't imagine a presidential campaign cycle.  I could barely last the 2 weeks i had to campaign every 4 years.
