UNM lands Vance Jackson

Recommended Posts

Weir is going to recruit a lot of talent to UNM. Jackson was a consensus 4 star top 100 player. Lots of schools were after him as a transfer. Look for him to lockdown LJ Figueroia next. This is going to be a good thing for MWC hoops. UNM needs to reestablish itself as a tourney caliber team.

Fantastic news, seems like he could have a Drew Gordon type impact.

Next year is going to be rough, but I'm really looking forward to 2018-19

LJ Figueroa will be joining for 2018 as well.

They can't.  He's in JUCO right now.  He'll be at New Mexico his sophomore year.

Not according to this article a month ago:

https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/college/nmsu/2017/05/18/lj-figueroa-not-play-new-mexico-state/101862090/

"Figueroa was enrolled at NMSU for the spring semester and even though he never played a minute for the Aggies, NMSU could block a transfer to UNM, UTEP or any other Western Athletic Conference school. But Figueroa could possibly seek a waiver to be immediately eligible and transfer to a school of his choosing since he didn't play in any games for the Aggies."

He's in JUCO right now.  Your article is from May and is outdated.

It's nice to 'out-recriut' P5s such as Washington, Rutgers and TCU as well as MW strongman SDSU.

Hopefully this is the rule vs the exception.

I like Coach Weir and his staff.

P5 is irrelevant in college basketball.  Gonzaga made the national championship game.  New Mexico has elite facilities and fan support.  It's a pretty easy sell to recruits.  He got Haley and Figueroa to New Mexico State.  He can do even better recruiting wise at New Mexico.

Have to disagree.

In order to compete on the national stage, you have to hold on to the quality coaches, ie Mark Few. Gregg Marshall, Steve Fisher, UNM's Steve Alford.

When P5 money comes calling, successful coaches are gone. Very difficult to maintain consistent, nationally relevant programs at this level.

P5 matters.

P5 matters.

Wichita State is paying Marshall $3.3 million per year.  Few is happy making $1.5 million per year.
