Container ship hits the Fitzgerald

Recommended Posts

Hard to see this as an accident.   The container ship couldn't have hit the Fitzgerald more in the middle if it tried.

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-40310563

The ACX Crystal, a 222-metre (730ft) Filipino-flagged container ship, was travelling between the Japanese cities of Nagoya and Tokyo.

Marine traffic records suggest the ACX Crystal made a sudden U-turn roughly 25 minutes before the collision with the USS Fitzgerald. It is not clear why it changed course.

Marine traffic records suggest it was travelling at 14.6 knots (27km/h) at the time of the collision.

Gee, if only we had an Ambassador to Japan and a Navy Secretary to deal with this, but none have been appointed.

Wait until an hurricane hits and we still don't have a FEMA director either

Who hit who? And how does that happen? That captain's career is over.

Hard to imagine that the Navy ship, Highly maneuverable,  could not get out of the way had people really been on top of the ball.  But it was in an area where you don't expect any problems lke this

Pretty congested shipping lanes with 400-500 ships going through a day.  When the container ship pulled its abrupt u-turn, there simply may not have been enough time or room to completely avoid contact.  The CNN map shows it fairly well.

There are rules about manuevering with oncoming ships. All it takes is one or both ships not doing what they are supposed to on these big assed ships that don't turn on a dime....

People are fallible. The damaged are contains 2 berthing compartments and the radio room. I doubt the 7 missing sailors ended up over board.

The investigation will determine what happened and improve the rules.

One of the Final Five..........

Trump picked a guy 3 months ago.  Senate is slow walking Trump's nominations.

The first guy Trump picked backed out. After that it took him awhile to make a selection. And before that selection goes to Congress, background checks which take a month or more have to be completed. Congress has moved as quickly on his picks when they finally get to them as they have in the past. The delay is on Trump's end for late picks and choosing people without gov experience who take longer to move through the background checks.

But this one claims they are alive.

Unfortunately I suspect the 1st is correct and when they say hospital they meant the morgue.

You forget to mention democrats are using every procedural hurdle to slow the process.

Funny how when republicans did it, you were all up in arms.   Now it isn't an issue.

I was talking about the ambassador to Japan who was nominated 3 months ago. You are talking about the Navy secretary who backed out.

The Fitzgerald, it takes more than one screw up to cause an accident like this.

My knowledge of surface Radar is not good, but it would seem to me that at 25 miles out there would be no issues seeing this container ship. Modern Radar, surface, airborne, or anti aircraft search Radars don't have the same issues as older Radars with their "Main bang". Older Radars have an issue seeing close in targets due to the  delay caused by the time the reciever is turned off while the pulse is transmitted. Causing a blind spot from 0 to about 5km depending on the power of the Radar. Even with Moving Target Indicating equipment, older Radars can't overcome the Main Bang issue. I know we have a few sailors on this board who may be able to enlighten us.

Someone on the bridge of the Fitzgerald screwed the pooch on this one. That container ship should have been picked up on the Radar long before it got within 30 miles of them.

How would the Philippines know the location of our Destroyers?

Oh yeah... Never mind...
