NCAA hands down UL punishment

Recommended Posts

Quote

In perhaps the harshest penalties ever assigned to a Division I men’s basketball program in the modern era, the University of Louisville must vacate its basketball records from 2010 through 2014 in which ineligible players participated under penalties handed down by the NCAA infractions committee on Thursday in connection to the sex-for-recruits scandal in the men’s basketball program.

Louisville won the 2013 men's basketball title and also appeared in the 2012 NCAA Final Four. During a noon conference call, NCAA representatives will be asked to explain if that means that Louisville's 2013 NCAA championship banner must come down. U of L has 45 days to respond to the NCAA ruling by determining which games the ineligible players participated in.

Cardinals’ coach Rick Pitino was given a five-game suspension, to be served during U of L’s first five Atlantic Coast Conference games.  Director of basketball operations Andre McGee, who was found to have arranged the stripper parties in the men’s basketball dorm, was given a ten-year show cause penalty.

Oh no!  They have to vacate their records!  True punishment!

Damn, a 5 game suspension!

Justice clearly was served.

they would be vacating an NCAA title (2013) and a NCAA Final Four (2012)...along with all the money that came from those two runs.

I'm pretty sure that would be the first vacated hoops title...that's actually a big deal.

It's like the NCAA is so mad at UNC they're gonna hammer UL...that'll show em!

It just doesn't matter when you're asked to vacate that stuff.  You still have long term benefits because you won the title.  You can't take that away.  Nobody thinks USC didn't win the national championship in 2004 or whenever it was that they had to vacate it.  It'll be the same thing with this.  Nobody ever really gets in trouble.

The only things that really hurt are scholarship reductions and an old-fashioned television ban.  Even ped state didn't get a tv ban.  This is more public humiliation than anything that will truly hurt Louisville's program moving forward.

I'm looking forward to a new head coach who isn't a cud-chewing autistic retard.

No it won't.  They are in the big boy club now, and they pour money into athletics.  They will be just fine.

Look for the hammer to be dropped on some mid-level MAC school for a food voucher violation  in the coming weeks.

They should have just molested young boys in the UL dorms for 2+ decades.  Or covered up a murder within the program by a player on scholarship.  Apparently that's acceptable.  But hookers for recruits?  Oh hell no.  Time to drop the hammer.

Or allowed a culture that sweeps the sexual assault of women under the rug.

So they erase a couple of seasons record of basketball and lose their Championship...That still seems small for what the violations were...and they still reap the benefits from being there at the time. It's like Hawaii saying we had to vacate our NCAA Championship in Mens Volleyball from the 2002 due to a player violation (he was considered "semi-pro" overseas by the NCAA prior to joining the team). All Hawaii fans know we won and it helped recruiting still, it just will always have an asterisk of it being vacated.

Hawaii on the other hand got a year postseason ban, 2 years of losing 2 scholarships (later forgiven and reduced to one season with the Violations Committee saying it was overdone but damage was already done), vacated wins, a $10k fine, and reduction in allotted practice time. All because Gib Arnold gifted a player (Isaac Fotu) an iPad for a Christmas gift, Assistant Coach Brandyn Akana edited an immigration form for a player transferring in, and another player backup Center Davis Rozitis used a booster's car when the booster was on the mainland (even though he wasn't a booster but just bought season tickets within the past 2 seasons) to move into the dorm.

So when they say UL has to vacate the title and final four run and the money that came along with it, how does that work? They aren't even receiving the payouts for those credits, the American is. So the American loses the rest of those payouts and UL "loses" money they weren't receiving anyway? That sucks for the AAC.

they only lose their share of the credits.

The NCAA is a self governing body.  Their lenience is evidence that they don't want to set a standard for what they would have to face should they get caught.  I don't think all P5's are cheating.  I do think all P5 AD's are worried that they might be cheating without their knowledge and don't want to create a precedent that they don't want to live with.

All d1 schools that are recriuting big time kids are cheating and breaking rules.  Might even be something as serious as a snicker from the in room honor bar or a long distance call from a hotel. You know serious crimes that should result in penalties.   Pedo state and baylor are cool.

I don't know if any of you have been following the CU domestic abuse thing.  The coach was contacted by the victim who was getting regular beatings at the hand of a defensive assistant.  He passed it on to the AD and proceeded to promote the assistant to interim DC after Leavitt left before the bowl game.  Obviously the dirt bag is no longer on the staff, but CU took the situation very seriously.  They ordered the coach to donate $100,000 to a domestic abuse charity, and then since it was all handled just fine they gave him a $1.25 million raise.

A whole different level of standards at the P5 level than you'd find in my house.  Just sayin'.

Yeah, the NCAA rules are completely ambiguous.  They are also not a solid reflection of the brand they purport to represent.
