Wyoming and AFA - better served as "football only" in the MWC?

Recommended Posts

Currently the MWC has 11 basketball teams, and 12 football teams.

What if Wyoming and AFA stayed in the MWC as "football only", and then joined the WAC together for all of their other sports?  Would they be able to finally compete?

Original 6 all time MWC championships (men's and women's)--spanning 18 years

San Diego State 70

New Mexico 66

UNLV 45

Colorado State 41

Air Force 9

Wyoming 3

Advantages:

(1) the MWC would be a 9-team basketball league (allowing for more OOC scheduling).  Might consider bringing in Hawaii as a basketball member to be a 10-team league.

(2) expensive winter trips to Laramie would cease.

(3) RPI dregs Wyoming and AFA would be eliminated from the basketball schedule

the new WAC would look like this.

1---UVU

2---Grand Canyon

3---Wyoming

4---AFA

5---Cal Bakersfield

6---Cal Baptist

7--UMKC

8---Texas Rio Grande Valley

9---Seattle

10---NMSU

This would be a league where Wyoming and AFA would be able to compete.

As a aggie fan I want both these schools with us for everything.

Stunner give up on all the conference realignment  ideas. BYU is to good for all of us so just give it up. worry not about us low life schools

I do not think the Big Sky schools would have any interest in what I would want them to do about their conference alignment, so take the hint.

Premature and very likely unnecessary. Here's the probable Mountain Sky Conference circa 2026.

Wyoming
Utah State
New Mexico
San Jose St.
EWU
Montana
Montana St.
North Dakota
North Dakota St.
3 others from the current Big Sky

Everybody else in the MWC will either join a restructed B12 or a new nationwide BOR or AFA and CSU will join the AAC while Boise, SDSU, UNR, UNLV, Fresno and Hawaii all go indy for football and join the BigWest for Olys or they start a new conference which will also include Cal Poly and UCD or Sac State.

Everybody will be better off in the long run.

Boom goes the dynamite.

I am unconvinced that Hawaii would want to put their oly sports in the MWC.

We don't for women's sports. There was talk of switching our men's sports only to the MWC

I remember vaguely that Hawaii said the trips to California were a whole lot easier than going to Wyoming, CSU NM..etc..

That makes since... No one should take the Hawaii funds, least of which are the California/Nevada teams. It's just not that far away. If the west teams, as broke as they are, stopped taking that money and then the Mtn. teams gave Hawaii a taste for travelling for those games, maybe that might work out better?

That was the case in the 80s and mid 90s.  Hawaii's women's sports were in the BW (I think SDSU too), the men in the WAC.

Wyoming beats the shit out everybody in football and basketball? Maybe we should be in different conference.

Wyoming has won 3 total conference championships in the span of 18 years.

Even San Jose has done much better than this.

At least Air Force brings SOME eyeballs on a national scale. But both athletic programs contribute nothing to the coffers. Been that way the entire existence of the MWC

Hilarious stuff... sorry the Borg misses the MWC soooo badly.  It really does no good for Borg Units to suggest re-alignments to the MWC, which is doing quite well, to the chagrin of the Borg itself.

BTW, what's the Borg's next planned attempt to destabilize it's current &/or former Partners, while attempting to enrich its own coffers???   Maybe move its Oly's to the WAC or some other weaker MBB conference... try to get some kind of MBB Championship for it's team ???  How long has it been since Borg Basketball has been to the Dance ???

There's  no way UNM winds up in a conference like this. Top to bottom UNM has the second most successful athletic program in the MWC.
