San Diego State Is Out

Recommended Posts

Playing with fire and got burned with their demands.   Soon they will drop football and move to the Big West.  They have no leverage.  Are they thinking of playing in LA?

If SDSU has the funding to back this up, then good for them.  If not, bad move.

If they can afford to do so, SDSU needs to do what is best for SDSU, not pro soccer.  This Nick Stone dude needs to be working on Hillary Clinton's next campaign.  What a disingenuous bunch of crap it is that rolls out of his pie hole.

If you can fund it Spaz, tell this FS investors group to go to hell and do it in front of city council.  SDSU certainly has to carry more financial clout with the city than an as of yet hypothetical soccer team.

This is so reminiscent of SJSU's discussions with the Earthquakes.  They wanted a smaller stadium (no more than 23,000) to create "scarcity" and drive up ticket prices.  We wanted a larger stadium or, at least, one that could be expanded during football season.  Ultimately, the university would not buckle to the Earthquakes' demands so they located elsewhere.  I have no doubt that SDSU will solve this dilemma.  However, land availability will be an issue for them.

Well played by SDSU. This thing fails without them, and SDSU knows it.

One thing I see is that when this gets to the voters we will know for sure how much they support SDSU.  Seems like a lot of folks want an MLS team.  Should be interesting.

This isn't about MLS or soccer. Its about a land grab. If the FS team were REALLY about soccer they could build a stadium virtually anywhere in the county and put shovels in the dirt. The FS proposal is a bad deal for the city, the NEED SDSU to on board, and everyone knows it. This should be a very proud moment for any SDSU alum. They have finally shown a spine. The BEST possible use for that land is for SDSU expansion and the CITY it serves. Its not even close. The FS initiative is going to fail, and the FS people know it. They've gone all apeshit on twitter. Not very composed

Can't wait to see the aztecs playing at petco

That would actually be kinda cool, but I can see the Q staying open beyond '18 and SDSU taking over the maintenance costs until their stadium is ready.

This quote is concerning ....

"We have been very clear that the City cannot afford to keep Qualcomm Stadium open past 2018, and the Padres have clearly stated that the Aztecs can only play at Petco Park for one year after that," Matt Awbrey, a spokesman for Faulconer, said in an email to The Associated Press.

"While we are still willing to engage with SDSU, this decision has unfortunately put the university in a situation where this process will move forward without their involvement."
