He also said he UNLV should be right in there for top 3 in the MW.  He's usually pretty pessimistic (or maybe a realist haha) on UNLV so I'll take it.

This is great news for UNM. Sorry, but that name was ridiculous and screamed "small time."

Go get Sandia Labs, or Intel or Microsoft. :)

Facebook is moving into Los Lunas (10 miles south of Albuquerque). It will be interesting to see who bought the rights.

Lobonado is not telling the whole story here.  UNM athletics approached Steve Chavez, owner of Wise Pie's, to ask him to relinquish the naming rights deal because a multiplex naming rights deal has become available to UNM.  The is good for UNM because the new donor is bringing more money to the table.   Props to Steve Chavez for stepping up for taking the naming rights deal with UNM when no one else would.

There is some speculation that the new donor is Santa Ana Casino who already has the naming rights to the UNM baseball field.  Facebook would be awesome, but don't see that happening.

Owner of wisepies was given tge chance to  match the new offer which he was unable to. Wisepies is not going bankrupt, they just got out bid. It was in the contract that if a new entity stepped up with a better deal wisepies could be released from the contract. This is great news for Lobo athletics.

You guys are idiots. The naming agreement is public. It was for 10 years and 5 million. There is no stipulation in the agreement that another donor can come in and pay more. They had first dibs after the 10 years. You guys are spewing pure LoboLiar nonsense.

WisePies needed out. Krebs desperately wanted to save face.

That's who I'm thinking the new donor is... but I wonder what they'll change the name to... the "Santa Ana Star Pit", or,  Santa Ana Star Arena, aka The Pit!?

Here's an interesting clip from August 5, 2016 in Albuquerque Journal:

Quote

WisePies in 2014 signed a naming rights deal with UNM, agreeing to pay $5 million over 10 years. It has made its first two annual payments of $100,000 each but the terms call for a huge bump in payments to $600,000 each year starting this December.

WisePies co-owner Mike Baird told the Journal in May that it was in the process of selling the company to an unnamed, out-of-state restaurant group, though no deal has been finalized.

Sounds like two things; 1. Payment is big jump up and costly, maybe not getting return in investment 2. They were in process of selling company which could be stipulation of deal, $4.2M outstanding liability could derail a sale.

Also other article refers to tax troubles.

Oh I read the same PR spin you did. But the agreement tells a different story. If WisePies wanted to keep its naming deal, it could have. It was not required to match.
