Question for our resident progressives:  What do you think is going on there?

Venezuela has as much to do with American progressivism as Saudi Arabia has to do with American conservatism.

You see no parallels?  Progressives generally like to see govt "evolve" with changes in society....right?

In this case, I see a greedy electorate embrace unrealistic govt promises and choose to grow govt to get more services.  Am I wrong?

In the very same way that America's religious conservatives want to adopt Sharia law.

You just voted for a populist. Everything you just wrote best describes Trump and his supporters. Wake up.

Hasn't the electorate had several chances to remove their leadership?

While the oil wealth lasted, Chavez was able to buy off the majority of the electorate with subsidies. That and a legacy of severe class stratification enabled the government to stay in power by virtue of intensely loyal support it received from the lower classes. Now that the wealth has dried up the government is in trouble and taking increasingly desperate measures to hold on to power. The forming of armed militias by the government points to a pretty dire situation.

Is Trump nationalizing large parts of industry?

Sure you did. You're no libertarian. No libertarian would believe that mandatory government service to pay debt is a good idea.

Blue is a libertarian. Not you.

A populist dictator.

It is actually hilarious that Venezuela has put into action the same policies that American progressives want and love.   Yet these morons somehow think it is different.

Who is in your view?

Chavez/Maduro nationalized and confiscated large parts of industry and land.   Trump, warts and all is not advocating that nor is he part of this discussion.

Lets say, just a little bit more of the American electorate started voting for massive govt aid programs that are continuously peddled by our govt.  Would we be on the same path?

Assuming you wont answer the question.....Anyone?
