39 Haunting Photos Of The Civil War

Between 1861 and 1865, approximately 750,000 soldiers and 50,000 civilians died, while another 250,000 soldiers were seriously wounded. For comparison, every soldier fighting in the Civil War was 13 times more likely to die in the line of duty than were the American soldiers fighting in the Vietnam War.
In total, eight percent of all white males aged 13 to 43 living in America at the dawn of the Civil War died during the conflict -- that's approximately 2.5 percent of the total American population.

1861: Virgina passes the Ordinance of Secession and leaves the Union. Their stated reason being the "Federal Government, having perverted said powers, not only to the injury of the people of Virginia, but to the oppression of the Southern Slaveholding States.

Virginia had resisted secession following the election of Lincoln. But after the firing upon Fort Sumter it became evident that the crisis would not pass without war.

1863: Grierson's raid during the Vicksburg campaign begins. For the next two weeks, Benjamin Grierson led 1,700 Union cavalry 600 miles behind enemy lines from La Grange Tennessee to Union occupied Baton Rouge Louisiana. They destroyed railroads and telegraph lines, destroyed vital supplies, and kept a full division of confederate forces tied up protecting Pemberton's rear; allowing Grant's forces to safely cross the Mississippi below Vicksburg.

If you haven't had the chance to read the novels by Jeff and Michael Shaara, I highly recommend them.  They give a fascinating insight into the lives of those who fought.  I recently finished Jeff Shaara's books on the Western Theater of the war, following Grant and Sherman.  It was really interesting getting to learn more about Shiloh, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, and the March to the Sea.   It is our history and there is a lot to learn from it.  If we let it be forgotten, then it will repeat itself.

1861: Pennsylvania Militia and regiments of regulars under (soon to be confederate general) John C. Pemberton are harassed in Baltimore whilst debarking on train cars en route to an undefended Washington D.C. An angry pro-Southern mob throw bricks and stones, striking among others 65 year old African-American soldier Nicholas Biddle. The city police restore order and the troops continue on to Washington. They arrive in D.C. at 9 pm and spend the night under the incompleted dome of the Capitol Building. Tomorrow shit will get real in Baltimore.

1862: The Union Navy begins shelling Forts Jackson and St. Phillip at the mouth of the Mississippi. The two forts are the main defense of the South's largest city New Orleans, and pose a colossal impediment for the attackers. So strong are the defenses, that Richmond believes the capture of New Orleans must come from above and have sent resources up the Mississippi to defend there.

1865: Though Jefferson Davis wishes him to fight on, General Joe Johnston sees further resistance as futile now that Lee has surrendered. He agrees to an Armistice with Sherman at Bennet Place, North Carolina. In a week Grant will arrive to tell them the Cabinet has rejected the agreement, as the agreed upon terms exceed those between Grant and Lee.

I visited there fairly soon after I moved out here.

On April 18th, 1861, Robert E. Lee is offered command of the United States Army, which he declines. On the same day, federal troops begin to arrive in Washington D.C. and are warmly greeted by Dre's great, great, great grandmother on the second floor above the saloon.

The last war America fought that had a national defense rational.   Everything since have been wars of aggression that America had no business fighting.

In all seriousness his stance is unconventional but if you read into his thoughts it's actually not far that off the reservation

Baltimore_Riot_1861.jpg

1861: The 6th Massachusetts is attacked by a mob of southern sympathizers as they walked the ten blocks between train stations that would take them from Baltimore to Washington D.C. Under assault from thrown projectiles and pistol fire, the soldiers empty their rifles into the crowd and a brawl breaks out. By the end 16 lay dead, including 4 Union soldiers with 36 more wounded. These are the first deaths of the civil war after a bloodless opening at Fort Sumter.

Virginia Forces capture Harper's Ferry Virginia. The arsenal was abandoned by its pro-Union occupants, but not before they set fire to it.

Lincoln declares a blockade around the rebelling states. Though his Navy is far from being able to effectively carry it out (and there is debate as to how effective it ever was), the move carries significant International ramifications, specifically with regard to Britain and French shipping. It also puts Lincoln in a bit of logical bind that doesn't go unnoticed by the foreign powers. Lincoln claims he is putting down rebels, but the blockade is an act of war that implicitly recognizes the Confederacy. The European powers decide to see how things play out.

1862: Confederate forces halt the advance of Union forces under Jesse Reno at the battle of Camden during Burnside's Carolina expedition.

1864: The gunboat USS Southfield is rammed and sunk by the ironclad CSS Albermarle off the coast of North Carolina.

1865: Lincoln's body is carried in a funeral procession from the White House to the Capitol building where he recieves a ceremonial burial.

Holy shite, you have the same mentality as the French!!!!  Only you surrender a lot more. A head in sand isolationist. You need to learn your history on Japan. Only a complete dumbass would think Hitler wasn't a threat.

Good thing you're not an Oncologist. "Sir that cancerous mole is so small and far from your vital body organs, you have nothing to worry about." LOL!!

If you knew your history, you'd know that Germany had Uboats up and down the eastern sea board, they were sinking our ships left and right, especially the shipping lanes between Europe and NY.  You would also know that Uboats had dropped off saboteurs in NY with weapons to blow up factories, etc.  You'd also know that Hitler already had plans drawn up to invade the US up from Mexico and he had a long range bomber designed to bomb the eastern US. Hitler especially wanted the US because he felt that Americans had good genes in them because only strong tough people would make a journey to a new land and survive and thrive. The weak and inferior would stay behind in Europe.

So the US does nothing, Hitler has all of Europe and England and may have beat the Russians with all their resources on 1 front there at the start.  Either you have Russia owning all of Europe or splitting it with Hitler, or you have all of Russia, Europe, England controlled by the Nazi's.  And then they invade Mexico with all their resources and are approaching a US that has to suddenly get a war machine started producing tanks, planes and weapons. That would be too late. Our military was shiit before WWII and wasn't even preparing to fight a France let alone a massive blitz of tanks and planes.

So the Nazi's move in and destroy this country. We would lose 10's of millions in the next year or 2 from fighting and certain groups being mass murdered. Yeah, thanks a lot Einstein. You should take down that poster of Chamberlin on your bedroom wall and put up something like old Van Halen or something.

Tools.  Honest question.... knowing what was going on in Nazi Germany and knowing Britain would not have survived without the assistance of the United States.....  would you really have preferred the US stay out of WW2?

Yes and your post is false.

First Britain had already defeated Germany's attempt to cross the Channel in 1940.   We did not save them.   Read some basic history.

Second who cares if Germany or Russia has taken over Europe it doesn't matter.

Third we could have spent double the amount on the Manhattan project because we weren't fighting a war and had ICBMs by 1945.

I don't think Briton survives without supply from the US but that's a matter of opinion.

They had already survived by the time we entered the war.  We actually didn't do anything significant in the european theater until we invaded Italy in sept of 43 a full 3 years after the battle of Britain.

Just because we weren't in the war doesn't mean we couldn't have sold England weapons.

Africa was a sideshow that was already decided before we showed up.

I don't believe Germany U boats would have allowed merchant and oil ships to reach Briton.  They were being threatened in early 41 already.
