CONTRACTION not expansion is the way forward.

CUSA is reeling from adding too many teams.

The Sun Belt just contracted and downsized to 10 football teams (with a conference championship game).

It's clear that the California Schools dislike Wyoming for some odd reason.   They act like traveling to Laramie is akin to traveling to Russia.  That, and the Front Rangers controlling Hair Thompson.   So CONTRACTION is the way forward.  Schools will have more basketball and football success in a smaller conference.

PACIFIC COAST CONFERENCE (each team has a rival) (7-game conference schedule, 5 games OOC)

1--UNLV

2--NEVADA

3--SDSU

4--HAWAII

5--SJSU

6--FRESNO

7--BOISE

8--USU

MOUNTAIN SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE (each team has a rival) (7-game conference schedule, 5 games OOC)

1--WYOMING

2--CSU

3--AFA

4--UNM

5--NMSU

6--UTEP

7--TEXAS ST

8--UTSA

Of course, with only a 7-game conference schedule, teams from the 2 conferences would still have room to schedule each other----if they wanted to.   This would cut down on costs.

Both conferences would be smaller, and save money.  A smaller conference means more teams get the chance to win.  Bigger conferences only make sense in the P5, where the view is that the conference schedule is very difficult.  That same respect is not give to the G5.

No thanks, USU does not belong in a pacific based conference, and if Hawaii is a full member that does not save much on travel.

1. At least when Jim Sterk and Elliot Hirshman were calling the shots, SDSU's position was to remain in the MWC until the B12 GOR reached expiration. I heard that from a good source about a year ago and have seen nothing to the contrary so we're likely here until at least 2025 although not much beyond that.

2. When the GOR does expire, it's almost certain that some of the current MWC members will join the B12. I once speculated 2-6 and will stick to that.

3. Even if the B12 leftovers take only CSU and AFA there won't be enough of a conference left to persuade SDSU to remain in so at that point SDSU would probably join the BigWest for Olys and either go indy for football or join the AAC for that sport. However, since the B12 leftovers would undoubtedly be interested in SDSU, the only way we won't be invited will be if Fresno and UNLV continue to flounder so we would be on an island. Because of their proximity to SD and the population of their cities, if those schools pick it up immediately, I think the B12 leftovers will offer all three of us plus CSU, AFA and BYU and/or maybe Boise. Assuming the nB12 begins with 6 members and decides to go to 16, that would still leave 5-6 current AAC schools to take too.

4. To conclude, good try but what you've put together will never come to fruition.

Boom goes the dynamite.

IF UCSD gets invited to the BW, does that change the Aztecs' back up plan, SGF?

Odds against UCSD having the clout to keep the rest of you from letting SDSU in: 10-1?

Also this. Mark Few just said last week Gonzaga isn't looking to leave the WCC but would certainly listen if anybody approached with an idea which might place the Zags in a better basketball conference. What if SDSU, BYU and UNLV approached Gonzaga about starting a new conference? Take those four schools and add St. Mary's, NMSU, CSUB and Grand Canyon and you create a 6-state all-western conference one heckuva lot better than the MWC and the WCC are these days. (I thought about including Hawaii but I'm sure Warbow is correct that they're headed to the Pac-12.)

I was referring to the odds of SDSU wanting to be in the same conference as UCSD.

As if SDSU would care. UC Merced and the UCSC Banana Slugs excepted, UCSD is as far from an athletics school as it gets within the UC system. Sports don't matter at UCSD. Never have, never will.

Yet the students and faculty gave their blessing to joining the D1 ranks.  The times we live in...

Your proposal of a new conference with those teams is intriguing.  NMSU and GCU would definitely both go for that.  Not quite a best of the rest, but it's good enough.

Sorry I thought I watered-down the Big Sky and PCAA enough with the additions of Wyoming and San Jose St.
