ABC, CBS and Discovery are most chosen a la carte networks; sports networks lag far behind

ESPN is 19th most desired network. Other sports networks are far behind

A study of TV viewers shows that viewers would choose ABC, CBS and Discovery Channel over other networks if they had the opportunity to buy them à la carte. While no pay TV provider offers customers to pick and choose the networks they want to watch, this gives us an idea of which channels are most valued.

The fourth-quarter study from Digitalsmiths show that ABC was the most popular network at 65.8%, CBS was next among 63.5% of the respondents and Discovery was third at 61.8%.

NBC was fourth falling one place from third from the third-quarter query. And History Channel was fifth. Round out the top ten was Fox, A&E, PBS, TNT and FX.

The only sports network listed in the top 20 desirable networks was ESPN chosen by 41.3% of those responding. And ESPN was 19th.

S1 was the next sports network coming in at position 33, NFL Network was 36th while NBCSN was 38th. The next sports network in the survey is MLB Network at number 56. Golf Channel was 66th, Sportsman Channel was at number 68 and the last sports network on the survey was Tennnis Channel which was 77th.

I'm a little shocked by that.  I thought it would be among the top four or five.

It never has been.  It's just that sports fans are like Deadheads.  The ones who like it aren't all that prevalent, but they REALLY like sports.

41.3% (whatever that means) is still a pretty significant amount

what were the demographics of the study? how many people were asked? i mean without any real context it's all just data, hard to draw any conclusions.

2 out of every 5 people would pay for espn, that's pretty decent considering i don't know any/many women that would likely say yes to a "yes/no; pay for espn individually" question. so if it's a 50/50 gender split, than lets pretend 80% of men said yes to ESPN. well who carries most of the purchasing power/decision in most households? especially in terms of "what channels should we have available to us"? so if 80% of men want espn....

considering espn's demographics, 41.3% is likely a very promising number for them. 94% male, 66% between 18-34....

ESPN, FS1, and NBCSports were all in the top 50...this survey is pretty meaningless though since ad dollars are as much driven by who is watching as how many are watching. Live sports hit key demos, there is a reason you see a lot of car and luxury ads watching live sports...

Also, live streaming events will be the biggest money makers going forward, especially as the granularity of ad placement increases with transition from tv to stream (i.e. you sell add by the individual viewer based on captured data, i.e. browser cookies, for a higher yield per viewer).

It just proves there aren't that many sports fans, nationwide.  I remember when I was in college I ran across many students that didn't follow or cared very little about sporting events, so it makes sense.  I guess that's why jocks became a divisive word on campus. lol

I've been thinking about it, and I really only watch the games in the fall.  I don't watch the shows.  I don't watch Gameday.  I don't watch ESPN Sportscenter in the evening very often, maybe only Sat night or Sunday night for NFL.

It really is a niche.  It's not a surprise they are hemorrhaging money.

Recently hired a young Aerospace grad from SDSU. She was vaugly aware of the basketball team and taken utterly by surprise when I mentioned SDSU football.

If you could pick 10 channels, including premium channel's which 10 would you choose?

In a vacuum, it's hard to say. Wouldn't they all have to have price tags attached? I'm sure a few would be slam dunks, definitely ESPN for me but beyond that some decisions would be made on price.

Women do, by and large.  Tons households are headed by single women.  Also, their share is increasing as men continue to leave the workforce and not get educations (getting left behind by the economy).  Our society is changing rapidly.

This.  Although if ESPN were to quit covering MWC FB, they'd be dead to me.  That's pretty much all I watch on there.

Discovery, Nat Geo, Animal Planet, that channel I watch on weekends that shows all the westerns, whoever has the MWC contract...that's about it.

Oh, some decent porn.  That's worth paying for.  The Outdoor Channel has some decent stuff, but it's a little overdone.

10 channels, fixed price. I should have been more clear.

nah, i'm guessing most men decide what channels are on the cable package. or at least, decide enough to include espn on their package. so if 50% of the people questioned for this arbitrary poll are women, then a lot more of them are going to end up with espn because of their spouse than zero

Interesting question. For my household, I would insist on FS1, CBS sports network, HBO, AMC, CBS, NBC. Disney would be a must. The remaining three would some combination of E!, MTV, VH1, Food Network.
