Please merge this thread with the other one identical to it.  There was a hiccup with the Matrix.

+100 for Matrix remark

Once again, why did the MWC choose to add San Jose State instead of NM State?

San Jose State is located in a nicer and larger city with a generally superior campus and far more attractive women. I can think of absolutely no other valid reason and for sports that very likely is not a valid reason.

How about UTSA instead of nmsu? I'll take that swap. Gives us a foot in TX, large market, more TV sets... Passionate fans (see NM bowl).

UTSA is a state-city.  The MWC prefers city-states.

You guys have really got to step it up.  The basketball venue is an embarrasment to a proud city and quality school, and attendance is terrible.

What is SJSU doing to engage the largely Asian student body?  Why aren't you getting fans and students out to the games?  Improving the venues?

I think SJSU needs to get creative and incentivize the students.  Make "citizenship" 10% of everyone's grade.  Make going to games a component of citizenship.  If the students risk a drop in their GPA by not participating in campus events, all of a sudden they are going to care and show up.  No foreign student is going to risk a drop in GPA.

Desperate times for Spartans athletics.

Thanks I'll pass your concern on to our president the next time I have lunch with her.

NMSU has a much better BB history than SJS...........football might be a push, but NMSU probably gets more attendance just because NMSU has no competition while SJSU is about the 5th to 7th option for the Bay Area

Football a push? I would guess that NMSU probably has the longest bowl drought in FBS without looking up any stats. SJSU football has some bowls and a top 25 finish recently.

There might be a very slight advantage for SJSU's amazing 3 bowl games in the last ~30 years, but the gap isn't nearly as huge as the one between the two basketball programs.

SJSU better on the field, but might not match NMSU in the stands

It can be done in San Jose.  Look at Santa Clara.  You need to copy them.

Great point.  Fans only have so many dollars.  There are just too many teams / schools in the bay area, I'm afraid.

Ok. Here's the reality of the situation. Imagine you're MWC Craig Thompson, and you know you're going to be asked to try and sell the MWC to television networks like ESPN and CBS, and get the best deal possible. You're looking at the television markets that your member schools reside in. San Diego State is in the best market, but only comes in at #28. Fresno? # 54. Boise? #106. Honolulu? #65. Laramie? Not even in the top 200. Fort Collins? Sort of in the Denver market (#17), but not really. Logan, UT? Forget about it. Albuquerque? #48. Las Vegas? #40. Your conference hasn't a single member in the Top 10 television markets in the country and you and the member school presidents all realize that the conference needs to expand. So, who are you going to chose? What market makes your conference more attractive for soliciting it the television market? Are you going to choose to expand your conference by adding a school in the 6th largest television market in the country (SF Bay Area), or the 92nd largest market (El Paso/Las Cruces)? If you're ESPN or CBS and are looking to sell air time to sponsors, is your contract with the MWC more attractive to your potential sponsors with the SF Bay Area market, or the El Paso market?

The fact that New Mexico State can put 15K in their basketball arena means absolutely nothing. Television is king. Whether or not San Jose State can actually deliver viewers in the SF Bay Area market means nothing. The MWC conference might not put a big dent into the SF Bay area television ratings, but even a poor showing in that market is miles above getting great ratings in the El Paso/Las Cruces television market.

After TCU left the conference, the MWC lacked having a member school in a mega television market. San Jose State, with all it's shortcomings, filled that need more than any other FBS school in the western United States. New Mexico State and Idaho didn't have a chance of being selected over SJSU, due to both being in extremely small television markets.

The decision that was made had absolutely nothing to do with basketball arenas, nor attendance. It all had to do with television markets, and being able to sell the MWC to television networks, and those networks being able to sell air time to their sponsors.

All this talk about market size, but when your school has virtually zero market penetration in that market then no one gives a shit. The TV market BS is just some circle jerk fairy tail told on the Spartan homer board to convince yourselves that you add some value to this conference...because everyone sure as shit knows that you don't add anything on the field. Fact is that the MWC doesn't need SJSU. You'd be in the Big West without the MWC saving your ass.  SJSU needs the MWC...not the other way around.
