MWC Conference Expansion. How does Baseball fit into the question?

Recommended Posts

Saw that the MWC only has 7 baseball schools.

Is there any benefit to adding 1 or 2 schools that have solid baseball programs (in addition to basketball).

Both Wichita State and Rice play baseball, and are decent, I believe.   Is baseball simply not a consideration?

I've heard some people say that cold weather is a reason for not having a baseball program. But that's just an excuse because schools in colder climates like North Dakota and Minnesota have baseball teams.

By the way, SJSU is bringing back it's Outdoor Men's Track & Field team, so we'll have 6 MW sports.

BYU and Houston both have Baseball, so I would say it is critical.

On the other hand, SMU and UTEP do not have baseball.

???  What?  Is that correct?

Correct.  Other than football and basketball on the men's side...

UTEP sports - golf, cross country, track & field.

SMU sports - golf, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis.

Why is baseball being discussed on a sports board?  This thread should be moved.

Why do you even exist?

some mountain welfare conference teams cant even field the basic fundamental sports to be considered p5 worthy.

So Sharta will have another sport it will suck balls in?

I'd say both schools are better than decent. Both would probably contend for the title right away....particularly Rice.

Those people saying baseball isn't a factor are mostly from schools that don't sponsor baseball. ESPN committed $500M to college baseball and airs more and more games every year. College baseball is great.

Believe it or not, baseball and men's cross country were at least part of the reason that SJSU and USU were invited (if not the entire reason). In order for the NCAA to recognize a conference, it has to sponsor a certain number of men's sports and women's sports. And in order to sponsor a sport, you need a certain number of schools in the conference that sponsor that sport. After BSU and SDSU announced that they were leaving, the MWC was in danger of losing their NCAA recognition due to an insufficient number of men's sports sponsored by the conference. By adding SJSU (who sponsors baseball) and USU (who sponsors men's cross country), the conference moved back into compliance with NCAA rules. So if a team that sponsors baseball were to leave the conference, the MWC might need to add another school that sponsors baseball to remain in good standing with the NCAA. But otherwise baseball will have no effect on the MWC's expansion plans.
