Fewer Bowls Could Be On The Horizon

"Beginning in 2020 I seriously doubt there will be 40 bowl games," Sun Belt Commissioner Karl Benson, who has previously been the commissioner of the Western Athletic Conference and the Mid-American Conference.

But no conference is about to voluntarily shut down one of its bowls.

That's where the oversight committee will come in. Bowlsby said the group has been analyzing data to determine how many bowl slots each conference can typically fill. When bowl lineups are reset for 2020 and beyond, conferences likely will be limited to a number that matches a five-year average of the eligible teams they have produced.

Here is the data I've tracked for conference with teams that have at least 6 wins.

MW MAC CUSA AAC SB   PAC ACC SEC B10 B12
2013 7 7 8 5 7   8 11 10 8 6
2014 7 6 8 6 6   8 11 12 10 7
2015 7 7 5 8 4   10 9 11 8 7
2016 7 6 6 7 6   6 11 11 10 6
2017

AVG 7.0 6.5 6.8 6.5 5.8   8.0 10.5 11.0 9.0 6.5

I don't know, your info supports about 39 bowls.

Actually 36 bowls when rounding down.

But why would you round them all down? These are averages, some years more, some less. Your numbers provide for 77.6 eligible teams per yer, meaning enough for 38.8 bowl games. If you want to round down to 38, I could understand that.

BYU

Notre Dame

Army

All 3 go to bowl games almost every year.

Let's not forget the independents, BYU and Norte Dame are usually eligible too. That's 39. Woohoo they'll cut 1 bowl game. :woohoo:

You beat me to it!

Why does anyone care how many bowl games are played each year?

I agree.  Who cares.

Almost all of the bowl games are meaningless now anyway.  Including games like the Rose Bowl.

It's all about the playoffs.  Just enjoy the bowl games for what they are.

I don't want to go back and look, does anyone remember how many 5 win teams made bowl games this year?

The 5 exemption teams were I believe

Army (6-6) with 2 FCS wins

Hawaii (6-7)

South Alabama (6-6) with 2 FCS wins

 North Texas (5-7)

Mississippi State (5-7)

Simplify it. Declare BYU* ineligible for bowls and go from there.

Who would fill the gap though?

Wyoming only goes to a bowl game on average of 2 times every decade, and usually loses when they go....

It has to be tough being a Wyoming fan and never winning at anything.

The "gap" is not really there. Treat BYU* as it deserves and everything else just falls into place.

At least there's hope for us. We may not win at everything, but we can wake up each morning and commit ourselves anew, whereas when you wake up, you'll still be a BYU* fan.

I round down because there is no 3/4 of a bowl. In addition, that keeps the bowls from getting 5 win teams.
