CSU ticket sales for Potato Bowl

This is the sad reality that hurts us when it's time to renegotiate bowl contracts/tie-ins.  Our schools all have shortcomings.

And people want to throw Hair under the bus that we have shit Bowl tie-ins. I call bullshit every time, and it pisses me off because it makes it seem like I am defending the guy. I can't stand him but our Bowl Games are what they are because our schools and fan bases are what they are. Not because of that guy.

Bob Davies talked about this before the New Mexico game.

If it's anything like here, it's below thirty with snow and wind.

They should get rid of that bowl game.

Never gonna happen. Hairball gets a kickback on the TV revenue.

Boom goes the dynamite.

Hell yeah.  Who do you want to blame for the pathetic lack of support for their team.  I get Boise's a shitty place for a bowl game.  I get their opponent is the Vandals.  Both would decrease desire and attendance in any fanbase.  But should it decrease it to a number below 500 fans and supporters of a conference member, a team that desires to some day get a P5 invitation?  It reflects poorly on CSU in this Poke fan's opinion :)

You are being generous saying "fans and supporters." These tickets are probably going to family of the players who are going.

I know my family will not be there; we made other plans for the holidays.

One problem for the MW fan is that the majority of our bowl options are not that palatable. All our schools have a good fan base that will travel, though not on the scale of a USC, Alabama, Michigan. But those people also know the most likely destinations for their teams post-season in August, and can plan accordingly. In my little list, don't get me wrong, there are plenty of bowls played in wretched cities (Boca Raton?, but you are in a warm state and near Miami... Dollar General Bowl in Mobile, sign me up!)

No offense to our MW fans and their hometowns, but....

Boise: $300-$400 airfare to Boise? It's cold, the game is outside, and, well, it's Boise. According to TripAdvisor: Things to do--Boise River Greenbelt, World Center for Birds, and the Old Idaho Penitentiary. Quality things to do aside from the game. I'm sure there are wonderful places to visit in Boise, but I'll do them on a summer road trip as I pass through. Sort of like visiting the Territorial Prison in Laramie; very, very few people say: Hey, I know, let's go to Laramie to visit a prison, but they might do it as they pass through driving from Illinois to San Fran.

Albuquerque: Nicer weather, artsy, but again, not really a grand tourist draw. The history and culture are nice, but I'd rather see all that during Spring or Summer.

Honolulu: Great! Wonderful. Expensive as heck to fly out there. Real hindrance to most people and their vacation plans. By the time our schools get picked for the bowl, tickets are sparce and very expensive. Let alone getting a hotel.

Tuscon: At least it is warmer, but the bowl itself is rather sad. It has room to become something greater, but for now, not a bowl that excites a fan base and, well, Tuscon though Phoenix isn't too far away, things to do there.

San Diego: Getting better. Lots to do aside from the game. Lots of flights from the majority of MW towns so airfare is reasonable. This is a destination that most fans, even students on break, would be willing to travel to.

Las Vegas: I don't know too many fan bases that won't travel to this game, but with the nature of our league, getting into this game is a crap shoot and by the time we know who is playing here, holiday plans have been made.

It's been said before: We need better bowl tie-ins. We need destinations for the fans as much as a bowl for the teams. I get that Idaho wants to market themselves, but a bowl game on the 22nd of Dec. just doesn't instill excitement in a fan base. Sure, we should all go and support our teams wherever they go, but we are also talking about families, budgets, time off from work, etc. Choosing to go to Boise or Albuquerque or Tucson for vacation in December (and around Christmas) or saving those days and going elsewhere? Not a tough choice.

Some suggestions:

San Fran/Bay Area--Con: Already one bowl here; Pro: Bay area attractions and weather local/nearby fan base with Fresno and San Jose

LA/Anaheim--Con: They've got the Granddaddy of 'em all, but also a game a MW team will probably never sniff; Pro: Lots to do for fans, nearby fan base with UNLV and SUDS

Boston--Why not? Con: Winter (but we've got the Potato so we're just swapping cities), distance away from fan base; Pro: They don't have a bowl game and they love football there. Good things to do and see.

Columbia, SC--Con: ACC/SEC hotbed probably make it tough to get a AAC vs. MW game, distance from fan base; Pro: Good weather, though could get "chilly." Coast isn't far away and plenty of history to see.

Anything in the Caribbean--Con: Same for Hawaii... late getting air/hotel reservations would drive up cost; Pro: Um... it is the Caribbean!

Reno--Con: @mugtang just might hunt you down and exact a pound of flesh for using this website; Pro: Vegas' little sibling (:P), but casinos and shows plus Tahoe isn't too far for skiing.

Denver--Con: Winter. Weather here is unpredictable, 5.2 million local CSU fans won't cheer for you; Pro: Beer? Um, skiing, some sights. No bowl to compete against.

I get what you're saying but consider this. The fans of AAC schools don't travel well either and their commissioner isn't exactly Pete Rozelle either yet that conference generally has better bowl games than we do. Why do you think that is if not Hairball's incompetence?

I'll have you know we were here first, thank you very much :police:

And I might exact a pound and a half to two pounds.  Depends how hungry I am.

The Fight Hunger Bowl in SF has had diminishing attendance ever since UNR went there however many years ago. Hairball needs to convince those guys that having a top MWC opponent for the Pac-12 would be better than having a middling B12 team.

Boom goes the dynamite.

Did we sell out the Las Vegas bowl ? How about the New Mexico bowl. The truth is the lack of fan support at bowls makes it very hard to move the conference forward.

I went to Laramie to watch the CCG, and despite the travel and weather it was a great time, you are either a football fan or just a casual observer. All the schools in this conference fall short with BSU the only possible exception.

More like Laws.  The four grain bourbon and rye are my favorite.

Again, not a big whiskey/Bourbon drinker but I will pick up a bottle. Thanks for the tip.

A second bowl game in Vegas could work.  Perhaps move the tater bowl to Vegas.

Here's my list of why not:

- $550 for cheapest flight that would work with my schedule

- mid-week bowl requiring me to take off work for 3 days

- 2 nights hotel at $300 total

- tickets at $50 apiece

- it's Boise

- It's Boise in winter

- driving would require traveling across the desolate wasteland known as Wyo in late Dec and even if lucky with weather would be absolutely mind-numbing

Screw it, I gave my money straight to CSU instead.  I think I would spend the same amount of money and time commitment traveling to a bowl in Florida.  If Boise's going to have a bowl, they should make sure it's a lot easier to get to than what it currently is.

Pepsi Center bb game against K-St officially had 7318 in attendance.  I talked with CSU staff in the AD office at the game who said they sold over 8k tickets.  The below zero temps and bad snowy driving conditions before the game probably kept a few people away.

Can you blame them?  It effin' sucks here right now.  I'd rather be in Phoenix, which is quite literally the worst place in the US, over Boise at this particular moment.

I see that you have never been to anywhere in Mississippi.  Not only does it physically suck, it is an intellectual wasteland.  Some of their wimminz are OK . . . if you don't mind the klan robes.

I went to the Potato Bowl a few years ago when SDSU played and had a great time.  It snowed about a foot the night/morning of the game and the metal benches had a good inch of ice on them under 6" of snow but we handled to cold and had fun.  I really liked the downtown area of Boise - lots of good restaurants and bars and I liked how everything was walk-able.  With the snow and Christmas lights the downtown had a fun feel to it.

At most bowls I have been to I ended up not doing much aside from eating and drinking and Boise had a lot of great options.  I can understand not going because of the opponent, but if it is a sorry opponent then you will likely win making the trip more enjoyable.  I don't get why people wouldn't want to go.
