OT: Rogue One

Recommended Posts

I put off watching TFA for wayyyy to long because I thought it would suck. Sometimes it's nice to be wrong. That show was a blast to watch.

Although I could probably watch Daisy Ridley sit in a rocking chair and read a book on the history of BYU sports and enjoy myself . . . really enjoy myself.

I should have known. JJ Abrams usually delivers.

I won't put off watching this nearly as long. Just need to come up with a new diversion to sneak into the theater. They're onto me.

I liked TFA fine and all...but it was such an obvious rip off of A New Hope.

we start on a desert world with a character who does not know their past.

an essential message is in a droid that must be returned.

a masked bad guy with a cape and voice changer is terrorizing our characters with a light saber.

there is a bar scene complete with a band.

there is a planet destroying weapon that must be stopped.

a father/son fight to the death on a catwalk (Empire Strikes Back, but still...come on)

I just felt like I've seen that movie before...that said, I give it 7.5 out of 10...or 3/4 stars...which is the same as I gave JJ's Star Trek (2009)

Loved the movie. My one complaint was they used Tarkin too much, at least showed his face up close too much. The CGI they used for his face was amazing but knowing that it couldn't be a real actor(cuz he is dead and even if he wasn't would be way older) made me notice the CGI. Which wouldn't be a big deal if they hadn't had so many up close shots of his face.

I think I am really going to love the single star wars stories. So much fun. New characters and the stories can go anywhere.

I loved the rogue squadron book series when I was a kid, did they pull any thing from those?

No it wasn't even related to rouge squadron. Rogue One was just a call sign the heroes used in the movie once. Kinda shoehorned in to have a cool name for the movie(in my opinion). I guess this mission could be the catalyst for them creating Rogue squadron in the future.

I agree with you though, loved the rogue squadron books(also Wraith squadron) would love them to do a movie or TV series along those lines. A Tv series could probably work really well. An ensemble cast that we get to spend a lot of time with as they fight the war.

It was supposed to be a parallel of ANH.

I completely agree. Not sure if all of that made it that much better or worse. But I thought it was a lot of fun.. 7.5 isn't bad.

I agree on Star Trek. I am not a Star Trek guy at all. But I liked that one. 3/4 for me too.

hey, it's a classic formula that works...like another poster said, 7.5/10 or 3/4 stars isn't bad, and I really enjoyed his Star Trek movie...but I don't feel like it's as epic as A New Hope/Empire/Jedi...that said, it's way better than George Lucas' episodes I, II, and III.

I know the EU was declared non-canon but there was a TON of character development, backstory, etc. they could cherry pick without pulling the whole thing. Kind of like how Marvel movies can cherry pick the best of comic book stories without having to totally follow them, but even less constrained. I'd like it if Corran Horn survived the transition from EU to Disney.

Agreed. While some parts of the EU were meh, the Rogue Squadron series in particular was one of the better parts of it so seeing that brought to life would be fantastic.

I have a friend on FB I don't talk to very often but he still pops up occasionally with a "yub yub, Commander" for laughs.

Without spoilers, do they spend a lot of time building character backgrounds?  As a reference, see Saving Private Ryan.  I don't need to see a bunch of background on Tom Hank's character or any other of the ensemble for me to develop an attachment to them.  One of the trailers made me worry they were going to have a lot of pre-war character build up.  Is this the case?

I was able to read some of those books and enjoyed them back in the day.  Tried some of the other EU novels and just couldn't make it through them.

Worst piece of shit movie ever.

Save your money and your time.

I can't fathom that someone says they liked it.

Disney should be on their knees begging Lucas to come back.

I went to sleep the movie was so bad.

Fire Disney.  When I was a kid lines would take hours to see a Star Wars movie, now the theater is empty.

You must have watched the porn version

Just saw it.  Way better than The Force Awakens. Spoiler alert they steal the plans to the Death Star.

Nice. Something to look forward to when I'm no longer inadvertently spraying moviegoers with contagious chest phlegm.

They build some of Jyn's back story but not really anybody else which is fine with me.

Spoiler

For those of you who have seen it.  Did you notice Darth Vader's palace is located on Mustafar?  He built his palace on the place where he killed his wife and was nearly killed by Obi-Wan.  Talk about torturing yourself.

@mugtang home is where the heart is. Also, much more convenient to treat ailments on site than some pesky interstellar hospital.

There are only two things I can't stand in this world: people who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.

exactly! I'm excited to see Star Trek return to the small screen in 2017 with Michelle Yeoh as Cpt, and 'Sasha' from Walking Dead as the first officer (told from the first officers POV)...they even brought in Nick Meyer to write it.

I also hear a young Han Solo movie starts shooting in 2017..I wonder if we will see the Han Solo movie before the sequel to TFA?
