OT: Golden Knights Trademark Request Denied

Recommended Posts

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Wednesday denied the Vegas Golden Knights' trademark request, citing a "likelihood of confusion" with the Golden Knights of The College of Saint Rose in Albany, New York.

"There are countless examples of college sports teams and professional sports teams with coexisting names, including Vegas Golden Knights and Clarkson Golden Knights, UCLA Bruins and Boston Bruins, U of Miami Hurricanes and Carolina Hurricanes, etc. We will plan on making these arguments and others in our detailed written response," the franchise said in a statement to Sports Illustrated.

Maybe this will force Foley to come up with a real name.

It's Vegas. The Golden Showers would be more appropriate.

The team should be named after an endemic animal

Bighorn Sheep (Rams), Mountain Lion (Cougars), Rattlesnakes (Rattlers and Diamondbacks), Coyotes, Desert Tortoises or Kangaroo Rats. Yeah that would work well.

NHL fubar'd us by not allowing any gambling references. Just call us the "Neon" and be done.

Vegas Neon or Vegas Nights (drop the K) are both slam dunks.  The marketing and uniform possibilities would be endless.  In fact either of those would probably be amongst the best pro team nicknames.

So let's choose a lame-ass name like Golden Knights that has nothing to do with Vegas.  It makes no sense.

Yes you do. Turkey vultures are called buzzards sometimes.

Maybe on the far outskirts of town, but I wouldn't consider it a species endemic to the valley nor one associated with Vegas. We also have Bald Eagles seasonally.

Pigeons or Cicadas would probably be more apropos.

I would love Nights. Pretty sweet name.

But no, have to be knights! Because it is "Fierce and a protector and blah blah blah"

And then make the colors black with neon blue, green, purple and whatever else we feel like.

I actually don't think it's going to be a big issue. From what I read last night the college doesn't even have a trademark, they just assume 'common law'. Not sure if that was correct though. Anyway, I think Foley pays them off and does what he wants. Eventually 'golden' will be dropped anyway.

Good. It's a silly name. Should have at least some connection to the town it's in. Vegas offers several options.
