Las Vegas NHL team name

Red Hawks sounds like the bastard offspring of the Detroit Red Wings and the Chicago Blackhawks.  Those two fan bases don't like each other so that would alienate both.

Of those three choices it would be nighthawks... but Night Owls might be more appropriate for LV.

Previous Las Vegas hockey franchises - the LV Thunder and the LV Wranglers - both did a pretty good job of naming and marketing.  The LV Thunder had the name long before the NBA's OKC Thunder, and since it's a different sport would there be trademark issues if that was re-used?

I know I lot of people will groan about suggesting bringing back a name like the Thunder - people I've talked to seem not to like "recycled" names, but I can still hear AC/DC's guitar riffs from Thunderstruck - as I think back on the team taking the ice.

The NHL has the Tampa Bay Lightning so Thunder probably wouldn't be a good choice.  Pretty sure OKC would have an issue with this name too.

Good news I'd say.  Is there a fan naming contest coming?

I know the lvrj did a bracket with a bunch of different names. Each day over the course of a couple weeks people voted. IIRC i think the winner ended up being Outlaws.

But as far as Bill Foley doing a naming contest, i highly doubt it.

Foley said in his initial press conference after being awarded the franchise that there would be no naming contest because "they just don't have time for such a thing". He stressed that logo and marketing development had to be done quickly which would not allow for a contest to be set up.

when they had listed 3 i was a little surprised, because this last week foley had said there were 4 under consideration, but that he wasn't ready to divulge them yet. so maybe he's going with the 4th, lol.

Well, from what that site said, in the OP, there are supposedly another 2 that are under consideration.

Silver State, why not something with Silver in it or simply the Las Vegas Silver

i think the problem with silver is that is strongly associated with gold/silver/bronze and then you'd thus be labeling your franchise as second best

probably not ideal but i do agree the name could be a lot more creative than those already suggested

las vegas hookers is still the best idea and i will boycot anything but a vaguely sexual or pathetically vegas term like vegas slots, vegas saucers or las vegas benders

Fortunately the NHL said the stay away from the cliche' gambling name types that a lot of people love to trot out..............Las Vegas Dealers, Gamblers, Snake Eyes, etc etc etc etc etc etc

not sure what's fortunate about that but 3 of the 4 names i've brilliantly suggested are not gambling related

Las Vegas Dam Builders

That is part of the history of the city.

According to this article it sounds as though the name Knights is still in play although as we've heard the Black Knights is out.  If the Hawks didn't fly (pun intended) with Vegas fans Knights might be Foley's fall back.

http://www.thehockeynews.com/blog/las-vegas-confirms-three-potential-names-wants-logo-in-place-by-pre-season/

So what kind of Knight would fit Vegas or the area?  Or maybe just generic Las Vegas Knights?

Knights is Foley's (team owner) pet name because he attended West Point & Army is the Black Knights.

Knights has nothing at all to do with anything Las Vegas or Clark County.............only if bastardized into kNIGHTS referring to the LV area nightlife does the name even have any local connotation.

The main obstacle for the team finding a name has been all the copyrights of other team names - This decision is also being worked on by the NHL & their people so it's not totally up to the ownership alone.
