UNLV Foundation is purchasing land

Recommended Posts

There's snow in Antarctica and that's a desert.

Yes it is. It's the worlds largest desert.

It was a more TIC comment on the perception that deserts are always hot.

Well, technically, it's too cold to snow in Antarctica most of the time. What little snow has fallen there has occurred over millions of years, and of course, never melted.

If you’re such a UNLV fan, why did you go elsewhere?

That is also true. crazy when you think about it.

i just mentioned it because of the surprise of 'dirt' being in the desert, lol. rock springs wyo is a desert at 6400 feet, and a dang cold one. but still lots of dirt...

seems like more of a campus extension play than a stadium one

could be, but it sounds to me like they are trying to provide a fall back reason to justify picking up the land, just in case a stadium doesn't happen. which is not a bad idea, actually...

Great digression, Yellow & Mugs... I was unaware that Antartica was classified as a desert - thanks for sending me a-Googlin' to confirm it and to learn why.

It almost seems paradoxical that so much snow could (for all intents and purposes permenantly) exist where so little rain falls. Before reading this, if you had told me Antartica received less precipitation than San Diego, I would not have believed it.

And people say the mwcboard is useless :P

Imagine being the Bluegreen Club 36 if a stadium is being built next door.

Built with acres of dirt around you and now you have the only stadium in Vegas literally next door.

I wonder if that property East of this location is even usable? I know the County aviation owns it, but I wonder if something can be built there.

All is well, For Rice is gone.

That was my thought also. Does the UNLV foundation regularly contribute to the athletic department? Even though I disagree with the need for a new med school in Vegas (you do need the residency programs), Vegas could do it right by investing 50 million in attracting biotech/pharmaceutical research infrastructure. I think UNLV only has 10 million budgeted for the first stage of the med school. The ROI would be significantly higher than a $200 million plus stadium for 6 home games and maybe a few more events that the casinos allow you to have. Unless it's more important to be near the campus for the yearly beating from the hicks up north.

Yeah, any chance they build the med school on this parcel?

I like the idea of attracting people/companies for research. I actually think another area to attract would be alternative energy. Las Vegas is ideally situated for solar and other geothermal energy research.

Med school being slated for near downtown in what they are trying to call the "medical district". Probably makes most sense down there as that's where the county hospital is which would be used for teaching, I think.

First comment I saw was from our good friend RR saying Hello PAC-12.

I really believe UNLV is buying into the theory of there being 16 team P5 conferences in the future and is doing whatever they can to get their ducks in a row for that P-16 invite (investments in football, med school, etc.).  Don't worry, Reno, if this all goes down, you are in, too.  State politics wouldn't allow such inequity between the two state schools.

The UNLV Foundation charges me over $1000 each year for the "privilege" of buying three season tickets in the crappiest zone of the lower level of the Thomas and Mack (which does not include the cost of the tickets)... so I would have to think that basketball revenue is one of the largest revenue sources for the UNLV Foundation (it raises a lot more than the Hillary Clinton speaking engagement did for them).  It is implied that what is raised is for re-investment, and presumably back into the athletic department.

Renewable energy farms are located where the real estate cost is minimal or free - meaning land that can be obtained from BLM for free, and proximity to communities is not necessary because it just needs to be wired to the grid somewhere.  If land has to be purchased for solar projects most of them will take centuries to break even.

I'm pretty sure that the land is the same "40 acres" shown below (which Don Snyder tried to acquire as part of that ill-fated "UNLV Now" project) plus the math would work out that the strip along Tropicana connecting it to the T&M would be a few more acres to add up to 42 acres.  Getting that connecting strip would be smart because it might make it possible to one day connect that monorail over to the T&M (which could be a selling point for events like the MWC Tournament)
