Like I said before, he can't win. But he will cause a lot of grief for some people in Iowa and most likely sink enough candidates that the field of true contenders will be down to 2 or 3 at the most. CPslograd
Sorry, I know this is a little off topic. But the biggest problem for the GOP in a presidential election isn't the increasing minority vote, because that's offset by the Dems continuing to bleed out in regards to working class white voters. The problem in this trench warfare we have now, is Virginia. Ohio is static, and if anything the demographic trends should slightly favor Republicans. Florida is more dynamic, but the there are different trends working against each other that kind of cancel each other out. But VA is bad news. DC metro area is always going to be liberal, and it keeps getting bigger. It's going to get harder and harder to overcome the Northern VA vote for the GOP. Without VA the GOP path to victory doesn't work on the electoral map. They'd have to try to build a new coalition. North Carolina is a problem too. aredshirt
The GOP is effectively the party of (mostly rich) emigres from Commuinst nations (Cuba, USSR, China) and white people. The problem is that their social values actually appeal more to immigrants (especially first generation) if they simply muted their (Protestant) Christian and jingoistic tones. However, "family values" are passe for young whites and jingoism is a core plank of the Republican over-50 appeal. At the same time, I suspect only the culturally American (or those scarred by Communism) and/or the rich would support Republican economic policies. I personally wouldn't mind voting for a party that was economically socialist but socially conservative but sadly such a party doesn't exist in the USA. The GOP is (well, used to be) a bigger tent party than the Democrats. While it's true that many of the more vocal Republicans are very lasseiz-faire, in each of the two election cycles the more centrist candidate won the nomination. The Democrats increasingly seem to be making room for Wall Street and lower middle class down; the upper middle to lower upper/professional and SBO/petit bourgouis are already solidly republican and will continue to keep at least the presidential nominee to the center. The GOP's biggest money will push the libertarian side but the bulk of the GOP voters- suburbia and retirees- are more interested in the status quo with a little more fiscal discipline. Remember that every argument you have with someone on MWCboard is actually the continuation of a different argument they had with someone else also on MWCboard. This demo was and still is the democratic base- middle to lower income working people - that's why unions lean D 95% of the time. Been that way since the 1932 election at least.............before that progressive republicans like Teddy Roosevelt were champions of the working class. The wealthy have been the GOP base since then too.
